Wilthen can be discovered through three very different themes: the history of its distillery, the world of Pumphut legends and trails through the Upper Lusatian Highlands. Culture and outdoor activities are distinct focal points here. Consider whether you would prefer to explore a story, choose a hike or include both in your travel plans.

The history of the Wilthen distillery

The Wilthen distillery was founded in 1842 by Christian Traugott Hünlich. It is considered one of Germany’s oldest and most important distilleries. Its long history makes it a distinctive cultural theme in Wilthen.

On guided tours, visitors can explore all areas of production. If you plan to take a tour, find out about the options before you arrive. This lets you plan the visit as a separate activity, rather than treating it merely as background to the town’s history.

Pumphut legends along the trail

The legendary figure Pumphut is another theme through which Wilthen can be discovered. The town has wooden monuments to Pumphut. Along the Pumphut Trail, large wooden panels introduce Pumphut legends and provide information about the figure. The trail is divided into eight sections and has eight stamping stations. It is described as a family adventure trail and combines hiking with regional legends.

The Pumphut Trail offers a different experience from a hike focused primarily on the landscape and route. If you are interested in stories and legends, the panels along the way provide a thematic point of reference. The wooden monuments add further visible depictions of Pumphut to the theme in Wilthen.

Hiking trails around Wilthen

The Great Wilthen Circular Hiking Trail runs over the heights around Wilthen and is marked with a red circle on a white background. Its route through wooded hills gives it a scenic focus. There are shelters and mountain inns along the way; individual facilities may change. Check specific services before setting out. The surrounding Upper Lusatian Highlands also have a network of well-maintained hiking trails.

The Oberlausitzer Hunderter offers route options ranging from 10–15 kilometres to around 100 kilometres. The specific distances may vary from one edition to another. The event has checkpoints and—depending on the route length—one to five refreshment stations. Participants also receive a route description with a map extract; documents and support may also vary from one edition to another. The longest route is traditionally completed in two stages, although the event format may change.

Plan events and find accommodation

The Wilthen Tourist Information Centre sells tickets for regional events. If you plan to use this service during your trip, check that it is available before you arrive. Tailor your further search to your own travel plans.
