Bertsdorf-Hörnitz combines striking architectural history with a landscape to explore on foot and from the viewpoints on Breiteberg. The Baroque church, historic mill, smithy and railway station each reflect a different aspect of the area. The 7.6-kilometre Nature and Culture Trail runs from Hörnitz to Bertsdorf; the views and narrow-gauge railway offer their own highlights.

Churches, Castles and Historic Architectural Styles

Bertsdorf Baroque Church was built between 1672 and 1675 to a design by Andreas Klengel. It served as a model for several Baroque village churches in the southern Upper Lusatia. Bertsdorf rectory also retains architectural features dating from around 1700. Hörnitz Church preserves its original mechanisms from before electrification, including the systems for the bells, tower clock and organ. The church can be visited by prior arrangement; call ahead to ask for the key.

Althörnitz Castle was built between 1651 and 1654 and features a striking Renaissance gable. A large, protected elm stands in the castle park. Buildings associated with crafts and agriculture also tell the story of the area’s different uses: Ressel Smithy dates from 1866; in the past, it produced wrought-iron tools for nearby farms and commercial gardens. Obere Mill remained in operation until 1900. An extension houses the Schubert Collection, with objects of cultural and historical interest from agriculture and the home. Hof Weikelt is a residential farmhouse dating from 1754, with a projecting roof.

The Nature and Culture Trail from Hörnitz to Bertsdorf

Over 7.6 kilometres, the trail connects 13 points of natural, historical and cultural interest. These include Althörnitz Castle, the two parish churches, Koitsche, Hof Weikelt, Obere Mill and Ressel Smithy, as well as traditional Umgebinde houses and the landscape around Breiteberg. The route offers plenty of reasons to notice the area’s architectural history and nature along the way, rather than treating the walk as simply a distance to cover.

There is parking at the Hörnitz trailhead. Bus route 1 runs from Zittau central station; check the latest timetable before travelling. The 7.6-kilometre length is a useful planning detail if you are including the trail in your trip.

Breiteberg and the Railway

Breiteberg’s summit is of volcanic origin and forms part of a varied phonolite hill landscape. Named rock formations include Querxloch and Zscherschelsteen. Breiteberg offers views over the Zittau Mountains. Visitor facilities include the 13-metre-high stone Dr. Curt Heinke Tower, built from phonolite rock from the mountain. Check opening arrangements before planning a visit to the tower.

The narrow-gauge railway offers a different perspective: it reaches Bertsdorf station, where the line branches towards Oybin or Jonsdorf in the Zittau Mountains. Visitors can watch shunting at the historic station; the engine shed houses railway memorabilia. Check the latest timetable before travelling.
