Discover Böhlen: The Pleiße floodplain and cultural history
Accommodation in Böhlen
In Böhlen, preserved floodplain landscapes, churches and architectural history meet active experiences. Parts of the Pleiße floodplain landscape have been preserved in the Gaulis district, where rare heron species and native small game can be observed. An extensive network of surfaced paths runs through the Pleiße floodplain. Nature watching and walks can therefore offer a very different focus from a day spent among historic buildings or leisure attractions.
Floodplain landscapes and paths around Böhlen
The Pleiße floodplain has an extensive network of surfaced paths for walks. Another specific route is the tourist cycling and hiking trail along the S 72 between Großdeuben and Böhlen. If you are planning longer bike rides, you could also consider the Pleiße Cycle Route: it runs through the Leipzig New Lakeland and offers a detour to the Rötha Reservoir. The paths offer different ways to make your stay active; you can choose a route depending on whether you are planning a walk or a bike ride.
For broader travel planning, it is also worth considering the wider destination of the Leipzig District: the Leipzig New Lakeland comprises 22 new lakes with a total water surface of 70 km².
Churches, architectural history and culture
St. Christopher's is the oldest building in Böhlen and probably dates back to the 12th century. The church was first mentioned in 1540. The foundations of the nave, tower and altar table are Romanesque. A later chapter in the history of its furnishings dates to 1794, when the Donati brothers from Altenburg built the organ. Late Gothic figures of apostles and saints from the village church in Zeschwitz, destroyed in 1941, are also associated with St. Christopher's.
Another local connection leads to the Christ the King Church. Its history is linked to the purchase of 70,000 bricks from the demolition of the Geschwitz district near Rötha. Other buildings shape the streetscape in Großdeuben: a Baroque manor house with a landscaped park, the 1716 St. Catherine's Church, and numerous restored villas from the Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau periods along the main road. The different eras can thus be seen in specific buildings.
The Böhlen Cultural Centre also has a long cultural history: cultural activities began there in February 1952. The auditorium has 985 seats; at the time, the building was described as the largest cultural building in the former Leipzig District. The church, manor house, villas and cultural centre each offer a different perspective, from older architectural styles to the history of cultural life.
Scenic flights, flight school and outdoor pool
The Böhlen Flying Club offers scenic flights over Leipzig and the Leipzig New Lakeland. The club also has a flight school for people who want to become pilots. Check dates and the availability of scenic flights in advance. The airfield is right on the B 2 between Böhlen/Großdeuben and Zwenkau.
Böhlen's outdoor pool combines several water and sports facilities: there are stainless-steel pools for swimmers and non-swimmers, a separate paddling pool, water games and a 68-metre-long slide. Facilities also include step-free access to the water and sports options such as beach volleyball and a small-sided pitch. Alongside walks and architectural history, swimming and exercise are therefore also possible interests for the day.
Getting here and choosing accommodation
Böhlen is served by the S5, S5X and S6 S-Bahn lines. Buses, cars and well-developed cycle paths are also options for exploring the town. When looking for accommodation, you could first consider which themes you want your stay to focus on: nature watching and paths, churches and architectural history, or leisure activities such as the outdoor pool and scenic flights. This lets you choose where to stay based on your travel plans, without having to spend every day in the same way.
