Zabeltitz combines the Röderauwald with a remarkable ensemble of garden and architectural art, as well as insights into rural history. The district lies directly beside the 300-hectare Röderauwald Zabeltitz Nature Reserve. Nature, culture and different ways of sharing knowledge give your stay several distinct focal points.

Circular Trail through the Röderauwald

The Röderauwald Zabeltitz nature trail was established as a circular route in 1957. It runs along the southern side of the Baroque garden, beside the Große Röder. Along this stretch, the river winds in meanders through the riparian forest, so the route follows both a landscaped garden and a river landscape. Information boards and educational panels explain the local flora and fauna, as well as the complex relationships between the various biotopes. Those interested in how natural systems work will find not only a trail here, but also specific subjects to focus on along the way.

Palace, Castle and Baroque Garden

In its essential features, the Zabeltitz Baroque Garden, with its palace and Old Castle, is among the most valuable and best-preserved examples of Saxon architectural and garden art. The two buildings also differ in how they can be visited: the palace is accessible as part of a guided tour, which you can book in advance at the Zabeltitz information centre. The Old Castle is not open to the public. Built in the Renaissance style from 1588 to 1598, it is fully preserved and 84 metres long. When planning a visit, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the guided tour of the palace and the Old Castle, which is not open to the public.

Everyday Life on the Historic Farm

The Zabeltitz Farming Museum presents rural everyday life in a traditional family-run farm at the beginning of the 20th century, in a historic three-sided farmstead that has been renovated in keeping with its listed status. Furnished living quarters, farm buildings and tools bring different aspects of farm life to life. Displays on the production of milk, butter, meat, bread and honey add to the insight into agricultural work. The focus is therefore not only on the historic farmstead, but also on how living, working and food production were connected.

Guided tours of the farming museum can be adapted for different age groups. For school classes, topics include “Potato Day” and “Bread-Baking Day”. These examples offer a different focus from the nature trail or the history of the castle: they draw attention to agricultural activities and food processing. When choosing your excursions, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the landscape and its natural relationships, architectural history or rural everyday life.

Guided Tours and Visitor Information

A botanical tour of the Baroque garden is offered from April to October, depending on the development of the vegetation, and lasts 1.5 hours. The season and duration give you a clear framework for planning; the timing also depends on the stage of vegetation growth. The Zabeltitz information centre is a point of contact for tourist advice. It also offers a selection of souvenirs, books, cycling maps and hiking maps.

When looking for accommodation, you could first consider which part of Zabeltitz interests you most: the circular trail through the Röderauwald, the garden and architectural art, or the history of the three-sided farmstead. These focal points can help you sort out your travel interests while keeping in mind the different access conditions and time frames for the experiences on offer.
