Discover Oederan: Weaving, Crafts and Culture
Accommodation in Oederan
Weaving and clothmaking give Oederan a distinctive cultural point of connection. At the DIE WEBEREI Museum, the history of textile work is brought together with insights into the town’s history and local associations. There are also other topics to explore individually, depending on your interests—from farm shop offerings to activities at the Golden Star.
Weaving, Clothmaking and Town History
DIE WEBEREI in Oederan tells the story of weaving and clothmaking in Saxony. The permanent exhibition includes working handlooms, equipment for preparation and mechanical weaving, as well as an area dedicated to washing and mangling. A printmaking workshop, the history of the town and its associations, and multimedia presentations on local history broaden the focus beyond textile technology. This brings traditional crafts and local history together in one museum.
Opening hours may change; check them before your visit. This will help you plan your museum visit with confidence.
Farm Shop and Activities at the Golden Star
The Golden Star farm shop offers alpaca wool products, handmade gifts such as soap and ceramics, homemade ice cream and home-baked cake. The selection ranges from items to take home to sweet treats to enjoy on site. The availability of individual products may vary.
The activities at the Golden Star also offer a variety of experiences: visitors can play adventure mini golf with twelve obstacles, go on alpaca treks, use the petting enclosure and playground, and observe animals. These include goats, kangaroos and rheas. This gives you a specific choice between play, an outing and animal watching. Before visiting, check with the venue to find out which activities are taking place and available.
Central Saxony as a Wider Travel Destination
Those looking beyond Oederan to the wider destination of Central Saxony will find other distinct themes there. Rochlitz Hill, at 353 metres high, is a remnant of volcanic activity. It contains red porphyry tuff, considered unique in Germany and Europe. For nature lovers, Geopark Porphyrland in Central Saxony offers opportunities for hiking and cycling; the Mulde Cycle Route runs through the district of Central Saxony.
Outdoor activities also vary: sailing is possible at Kriebstein Reservoir. In the ridge area of the Ore Mountains in Central Saxony, there are excellently groomed ski slopes and cross-country trails. These regional offerings cater to different activities and seasons. Which ones suit your trip depends on how you would like to spend your time.
The cultural attractions across the wider destination of Central Saxony also offer a range of experiences. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911; the exhibition “People Make Clothes” features 52 costumes from 1,000 years of European fashion history. Lichtenwalde Castle and Park display objects from foreign cultures, as well as porcelain, lacquerware, furniture and silk embroidery. At Freudenstein Castle, the terra mineralia exhibition presents more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. Augustusburg Castle houses a motorcycle museum.
At Rochlitz Castle, immersive experiences take visitors through the castle’s history and that of its residents over several centuries. Accessibility is also important when planning a visit: the castle is not fully accessible to visitors with mobility impairments, although some highlights can be explored with only a few steps.
Underground, two mines offer different experiences. Tours of the “Reiche Zeche” training mine begin with a shaft descent, usually via the “Reiche Zeche” shaft. The hoist cage reaches the shaft station at a depth of around 150 metres. At the “Alte Hoffnung Erbstolln” visitor mine in Schönborn-Dreiwerden, in the municipality of Rossau, visitors can travel underground by boat.
There are also different kinds of events: the Central Saxon Cultural Summer is an annual, three-month summer festival featuring more than 40 events across Central Saxony; the programme varies from year to year. The “Historic Settlement Procession” takes place annually in the Striegis valleys. If you are planning around an event date, check the latest dates and programme.
Make your choice based on the specific places you plan to visit.
