Hundsgrün: Hiking trails, history and potato tradition
Accommodation in Hundsgrün
Discover Hundsgrün through several themes: the Vogtland Knollensteig is a circular hiking trail, Stage 4 of the Vogtland Panorama Trail passes through the forest to sweeping views, and local history and potato-related attractions complete the picture. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests—hiking, historical sites or regional food culture.
Circular trail and panoramic stage
The Vogtland Knollensteig is 17.41 kilometres long and follows a circular route. The starting point and finish are at Hundsgrün railway station. From the station, the trail runs through the forest along the Elster valley towards Unterwürschnitz. Its circular layout and precise distance provide clear reference points for planning your day. Free parking is available at the stop near the B 92.
Stage 4 of the Vogtland Panorama Trail offers a different kind of hike: it leads from Oberhermsgrün and Ebersbach towards the Hundsgrün viewpoint, then through dense forest via the Lochhäuser and along the Lochbach. Along the way, the panoramic view stretches as far as Hoher Stein in the Czech Republic and Wirtsberg. You can choose between a circular trail with named start and finish points and a stage that takes in a viewpoint, forest and stream. The Vogtlandbahn runs on the Zwickau–Plauen–Adorf–Cheb route to Hundsgrün. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
Traces of local and church history
Hundsgrün was first mentioned in 1414 as Hudisgrune and Hundczgrune. From 1582 to 2001, it belonged to the Oelsnitz parish. These details point to different aspects of history: the early forms of the name and a long-standing church affiliation.
The historic Bamberg–Regensburg–Naumburg/Zeitz Three-Bishoprics border lies within Hundsgrün’s district and bears witness to significant church and regional history. Three artistically designed stone steles in the Untereichigt “Loch” are part of the “Tour of Stones.” They commemorate the pre-Reformation significance of the “Streitpfarre” Eichigt. Local history thus brings together early forms of the name, church affiliation and a border history that is also marked on the ground by the steles.
Potato tradition: monument and tasting
As part of the Vogtland Knollensteig, a potato house serves as a monument to the origins of potato cultivation around 375 years ago. Near Hundsgrün, Erlebnis-Ferienhof Wilfert in Unterwürschnitz offers potato tastings by prior arrangement. The potato theme appears in different forms: as a historical reference at the monument and as a tasting experience that requires advance booking.
