Klingenthal: Music and sweeping views
Accommodation in Klingenthal
Klingenthal lies in the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park on the Czech border. From Aschberg, panoramic views stretch across the Vogtland, Upper Franconia and neighbouring Bohemia, as well as Klingenthal’s narrow valleys. The landscape is complemented by a rich musical history, circular trails, high-altitude hikes, cycling options and seasonal winter sports. You can shape your stay around scenic views, local history and active days.
Local history along the Tafelweg trail
The Klingenthal Tafelweg is a circular walking trail starting at the Dr. Giers House. It leads to historically significant sites around the town centre. Information boards add local history, historic images and details about the town’s sights and the landscape of the Valley of Music. The route brings together local history and landscape themes.
Music town, arena and concerts
The Klingenthal Museum documents how the town on Aschberg developed into a music town. The Sparkasse Vogtland Arena offers a different perspective on the town and its surroundings: take the WieLi up to the ski jump tower; enjoy panoramic views from the viewing platform and the take-off tower capsule. The arena also hosts concerts ranging from classical music to rock, folk festivals and popular sporting events. Church concerts are held periodically in the round church “Zum Friedefürsten”. Event programmes change, so check the latest dates before your visit.
Hiking, cycling and winter sports
The Höhensteig is 50 kilometres long, is certified as a Quality Trail by Wanderbares Deutschland and runs mostly along the ridges of the Upper Vogtland at elevations of 800 to over 900 metres. Numerous inns along the route are ideal for a culinary break on your hike. By comparison, the Klingenthal Tafelweg brings together historic sites on a loop around the town centre: a high-altitude route and a local-history trail offer two different hiking options.
Klingenthal has both steep and gentle runs served by lifts. Lift and piste operations are seasonal; check current conditions before your trip. The snow-reliable region around Klingenthal also offers more than 100 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. Availability and grooming are subject to the season and should also be checked for the latest information.
The Klingenthal–Markneukirchen gravel tour connects the two music towns through deep forests, over gentle hills and alongside streams. It runs mainly on existing cycle paths and public roads and has no dedicated route markers. The tour is weather-dependent; check both the weather and the current route before setting out.
Animals and play areas
Klingenthal Animal Park is home to more than 40 animal species, including alpacas, dwarf goats and meerkats. Facilities include two playgrounds and a petting enclosure with guinea pigs and dwarf rabbits. The petting enclosure is seasonal.
The wider Vogtland region
The wider Vogtland travel destination offers themes that extend beyond Klingenthal. Musical instruments have been made in the Upper Vogtland for more than 350 years; the Markneukirchen Musical Instrument Museum displays the world’s largest playable violin. The Royal Spa Gardens of Bad Elster combine extensive historic parks with spa architecture of cultural and historical significance. Regional cuisine is another highlight: green dumplings, a Vogtland speciality, are made from raw, grated potatoes.
