Klempau brings together a distinctive settlement history and routes for shorter or longer circular tours. A white stork on the municipal coat of arms and a place to stop for refreshments locally also give visitors their own points of interest.

From the estate to the Klempau settlement

The Klempau settlement developed from the former Klempau Hof estate. The estate was initially ducal and later became a district estate. In 1938, it was divided into ten settler farms along Sarauer Straße and Tannenweg. This gives the village’s history specific names and a clear turning point.

The municipal coat of arms also reflects Klempau’s connection with nature and agriculture: it depicts a white stork and represents the municipality’s commitment to conserving the species, as well as the relationship between agriculture and nature. A pair of white storks regularly breeds successfully in Klempau. This is a striking natural motif connected to the settlement’s history, though the two tell different stories.

Cycling tours and local trails

Several routes in Klempau offer shorter or longer circular tours on foot or by bike. Cycle paths connect the municipality with the neighbouring communities of Krummesse and Berkenthin. One suggested cycling tour runs from Klempau to Krummesse; for the return journey, Tannenweg, Kählstorfer Weg or Taterweg are suggested. This gives you several options for the return leg rather than one fixed route.

Another option is the municipality’s Lindenbusch cycling tour. It runs along Sarauer Straße, through the Farchau district forest, Groß Disnack and Kählstorf. A low-traffic route from the village to the Klempau settlement follows the former school path and Tannenweg. This route is not suitable for bicycles or pushchairs. If you are travelling by bike or with a pushchair, leave this particular connection out of your plans.

Garden, refreshments and riding club

The Am Teich village restaurant attracts numerous guests from the surrounding area. A garden at Dorfstraße 16 opens seasonally to interested visitors, from April to September on Friday afternoons. Check the current opening hours and access arrangements before setting off so you can plan your visit accordingly.

The riding club is based at Klosterhof Klempau. Its facilities include an outdoor arena, a seasonal grass jumping arena and an indoor riding hall. If you are planning a visit, check in advance which facilities are currently available and what access arrangements apply.

The wider destination: the Duchy of Lauenburg

Beyond Klempau, the Duchy of Lauenburg offers a distinctive landscape. Forests cover 26 percent of the district, which also encompasses 48 lakes. It is home to the Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest contiguous forest. The Duchy of Lauenburg has long-distance hiking trails E1, E6 and E9, as well as more than 20 shorter routes ranging from 4 to 27 kilometres. While you can choose between shorter and longer circular tours through Klempau, these regional routes have designated lengths of up to 27 kilometres.

The wider destination also includes the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park. Established as a protected area for visitors to enjoy in 1960, it has hiking trails, observation towers, educational trails and rest areas. Visitors can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in forest lakes in the nature park; four cycling tours are signposted. This offers a broader range of nature and outdoor activities than the routes directly in Klempau.

Culture and nature education also add to the options in the Duchy of Lauenburg. The Uhlenkolk Environmental Centre in Mölln offers nature education and experience programmes for kindergartens, school classes, families and adults. The District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg in Ratzeburg displays exhibits on the history of the Dukes of Lauenburg and the inner German border. You can combine Klempau’s local history and trails with regional nature or cultural themes if you want your itinerary to extend beyond the village.
