The Lübeck district of St. Jürgen has a wide green belt to the south, with fields and meadows stretching into the Lauenburg countryside. To the east, the Wakenitz forms the boundary; its floodplains are part of a rich nature reserve. Nature and history can be found here in many different forms. The landscape on either side is clearly contrasting: fields and meadows shape the green belt to the south, while the Wakenitz forms the boundary to the east.

Explore the landscape on foot and on the water

If you would like to explore the area on foot or by bike, the Drägerweg is part of the well-developed network of hiking and cycling trails in the Wakenitz and Falkenhusen landscape conservation area. For a different kind of stay, there are also opportunities on the water: boating and fishing are permitted in the protected area. You can choose between routes through the landscape and activities on the water.

History at St. Jürgen Chapel

The present-day St. Jürgen Chapel was built at its current site on Ratzeburger Allee in 1646, after the old chapel was demolished in 1629. It is the oldest church building in its parish. An older piece of history can be found at the altar: a gravestone from 1391 now serves as its altar slab. The dates tell of several historical layers that come together at the chapel. The gravestone is 255 years older than the present-day chapel; the new building followed the demolition of the old chapel 17 years later.

School Garden: Plant Diversity and Learning

The school garden in Lübeck’s St. Jürgen district is home to around 2,000 different plant species and has officially been designated a protected garden monument since 2017. Learning about plants is also part of its mission: school classes can grow vegetables there themselves. The garden’s seasonal opening hours are listed as daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., from April 1 to October 31. Before your visit, check whether these hours apply to your planned date.

Agriculture and Nature at Ringstedtenhof

Ringstedtenhof offers activities for adults, teachers, families and groups. Topics include agriculture, where food comes from, and nature and the environment. The farm tours are aimed at children aged three and up, who can experience the plants and animals of a farm firsthand. The age guidance makes the tour a specifically described option for families with younger children, while the other activities also appeal to different interests and groups.

Close-to-Nature Swimming in Lübeck

Falkenwiese Natural Pool offers close-to-nature swimming experiences in the heart of Lübeck. This adds another distinct way to spend time outdoors, complementing water and nature experiences with routes through the landscape conservation area.
