Landkirchen combines a distinctive history of church architecture with cycling routes that pass through the village. At its heart is St. Peter’s Church: its origins date back to around 1230, while the tower and furnishings mark other periods. There is also a practical point of reference for visitors. Those interested in culture and outdoor activities will find a range of ways to plan their trip.

St. Peter’s Church: architectural history and furnishings

St. Peter’s Church is a three-aisled brick hall church, built around 1230. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles. The free-standing wooden church tower dates from 1638. The church and tower therefore have different dates: the church dates back to the early 13th century, and the tower to the 17th century.

The church contains a Baroque altar and pulpit; the pulpit dates from 1727. Another object is the Landesblock, a heavy chest carved from an oak trunk. It is over 800 years old and once held Fehmarn’s most important official documents. The furnishings thus bring sacred objects together with a chest that once served an official purpose.

The furnishings also include two votive ships, one of them Germany’s oldest model ship, dating from 1617. The collection of prayer stools dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and is decorated with inscriptions and house marks belonging to Fehmarn families. There is also a Marian crown dating from around 1390. The different objects offer insights into different periods and subjects—from family emblems and model ships to sacred furnishings and historical documents.

Cycling routes connected with Landkirchen

In the wider region, the “Pinselpoeten” cycling tour covers 34.8 kilometres and runs mainly along paved paths. The route leads to Landkirchen and passes St. Peter’s Church. The village is also connected with the poet Klaus Groth, who lived here for several years. This tour therefore brings together the church and Groth’s years in Landkirchen as specific cultural points of interest.

Another option is the 41-kilometre Kirchentour. It is a circular route that starts at St. Peter’s Church. Compared with the “Pinselpoeten” route at 34.8 kilometres, it is longer and has a different focus, with the church as its starting point. Route conditions may change, so check the latest information about the Kirchentour before setting out.

Visitor information and church tours

Opposite Landkirchen Primary School, there is an information kiosk that is open around the clock. It provides free information materials for visitors and serves as a contact point when the tourist information offices are closed. This means there is a specific place to find tourist information even outside their opening hours.

During a church tour, guide Georg Marquardt shares stories about art, people and customs connected with the church. If you are planning a tour, please check the latest information beforehand, as the programme may change.
