Discover Barmstedt’s history and lake
Accommodation in Barmstedt
Barmstedt combines a rich heritage with experiences by the water and paths through a rural landscape. On the castle island in Lake Rantzau, a listed historic ensemble meets a range of cultural and leisure activities. This makes it easy to shape your stay around different interests: history and architecture, a day at the beach or time outdoors.
Castle Island and Lake Rantzau
Castle Island is home to an art studio, arts and crafts, the Museum of the County of Rantzau, a former castle prison, a working watermill, a rowing-boat rental and a circular path around the lake. The various stops make the island a destination for culture and outdoor activities. If you want to focus on the lake itself, the bathing area has a sandy beach, a lawn of around 5,000 square metres, volleyball and table tennis. There is a paddling area for children, as well as a non-swimmer zone and a swimming area with depths of up to two metres.
Traces of several centuries
Barmstedt and Rantzau Castle Island have played a central role in the history of southern Holstein since Barmstedt was first mentioned in written records in 1140. In the Middle Ages, the Knights of Barmstede and later the Schauenburgs administered the region from Barmstedt. Settlement at the site on the Krückau dates back even further: it began in the Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago. Burial mounds were visible there until the 19th century. Craftsmanship is also part of the town’s history: in the 19th century, Barmstedt’s shoemakers made waterproof sea boots.
Church architecture, organ and regional history
The Church of the Holy Spirit is a Baroque hall church and an original monument from the time of the Counts of Rantzau. It was consecrated at Pentecost in 1718. Biblical scenes were painted on its wooden barrel vault in 1754/56. The Baroque organ was completed in 1720 and has around 2,200 pipes and 34 stops. Organ, choir and instrumental concerts are held in the church, including an annual orchestral concert with choir. If you plan to attend a concert during your trip, check the dates in advance.
The Museum of the County of Rantzau explores regional history and the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked there in different eras. Its building was used as a district court until 1974; right next door is the former castle prison, which remained in use until 1927. More cultural and musical events take place at the Humburg House and the Kulturschusterei. Their programme details may change.
Explore on foot and by bike
The lake, forest and rural surroundings form a recreational landscape used year-round for cycling and walking. Five cycling routes in the region connect gardens, tree nurseries and natural landscapes. One specific route option is the 26-kilometre Bilsbek Lowlands route, rated easy, which lets you explore Holstein’s moorland by bike. You can also combine a trip to the lake with a visit to the traffic-calmed town centre: it is one kilometre from the lake and accessible via the blue or green circular route.
You can reach Barmstedt from Elmshorn by train in 15 minutes. Check the current timetable before travelling. Compare the exact address of any attraction with the places you plan to visit.
