Alt Duvenstedt: Moor, Mill and Circular Routes
Accommodation in Alt Duvenstedt
Alt Duvenstedt brings together nature park landscapes, moorland and a history that reaches back to an early written form of its name. Stenten Mill and signposted circular routes offer two further points of reference: cultural heritage and exploring the landscape on foot or by bike. When planning your trip, you can weigh up nature, history and the wider range of regional excursions.
Nature Park, Raised Bog and Landscape
Alt Duvenstedt lies on the edge of HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park, in a landscape shaped by glacial terminal moraines. Hedgerows, tree-lined roads, lakes, forests and moors are all part of the scenery. Duvenstedt Moor lies within the municipality: it is a raised bog and an important biotope with potential for regeneration. Alt Duvenstedt is also considered to be centrally located in Schleswig-Holstein.
Mill History and Historical Traces
The local history is especially tangible at Stenten Mill: built in 1697–1699, it is regarded as a landmark of Alt Duvenstedt and has well-preserved mill sails. The name also reaches far back: “Duvenstede” first appears in written records in 1328. The Alt Duvenstedt Village Museum includes a reconstruction of an old bread oven and a restored half-timbered wall dating from 1780. Together, these examples trace the story from architectural history to written records of the place name and rural building culture.
Circular Routes and Practical Information
Five regional cycling and walking circular routes are signposted in Alt Duvenstedt. Several routes connect the village to the wider cycling and walking network; there are also several rest areas with shelters. Bistensee Lake lies along these routes, but there is no public bathing area there because the surrounding land is privately owned. One cycling and walking loop also includes Kolonistenhof. A path about 300 metres long offers views across the lowland areas of Otterbek and Stente. The Alt Duvenstedt routes are included in the tour planners published by the NOK Tourist Information Centre; check the planners for up-to-date information before setting out on your specific tour. There is also an outdoor swimming pool; check whether it is open before visiting.
Alt Duvenstedt and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde Destination
The Kiel Canal is also considered a nearby excursion destination from Alt Duvenstedt. Looking at the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination offers a regional perspective: Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, four nature parks and a 1,000-kilometre signposted cycling network. About 70 kilometres, or two thirds, of the Kiel Canal run through the district. The local and district perspectives raise different planning questions: moorland, the mill and local circular routes shape the choices in Alt Duvenstedt; the coast and district-wide cycling network are part of planning at the regional level. At district level, the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail runs through all four nature parks.
