Dörphof’s long sandy Baltic Sea beach and the Schwansener See nature reserve give the area two distinctive features: beach days sit alongside a landscape of reeds, salt marshes and seasonal bird resting areas. This makes it possible to enjoy the area for swimming and walks as well as for its protected habitats.

Beach and protected landscape

Dörphof’s long sandy Baltic Sea beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and walking. There is a campsite in Schubystrand. The beach provides a clear focus for days by the water, while the Schwansener See nature reserve offers a different view of the landscape.

The nature reserve covers 240 hectares, most of which lies in Dörphof. Its landscape features include reed beds, salt marshes, wet hollows, a beach ridge and shallow Baltic Sea waters. The protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network. This mix of coastal and wetland habitats shapes the natural landscape alongside the beach.

In autumn and spring, many waterbirds and waders use the area to rest and feed. Schwansener See also serves as a daytime resting place for tufted ducks and pochards. Visitors are asked to keep quiet near nesting birds. During the breeding season, from 15 March to 17 July, visitors must stay on designated paths and keep off the beach ridge. Check the local notices before visiting and observe the seasonal rules.

Plan your stay around your interests

Both features shape Dörphof in different ways. If you plan to watch wildlife, be sure to respect nesting birds and follow the applicable path rules.

Rendsburg-Eckernförde as the wider region

The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde broadens the focus to coastal and nature experiences. The district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a 1,000-kilometre signposted cycling network; it is also home to four nature parks. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail runs through all four parks. The European long-distance path E1, marked along its entire route with a white St Andrew’s cross, passes through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorfer Wald and over Aschberg. In fine weather, the panoramic view from 98-metre-high Aschberg extends as far as the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel.

History and regional food culture also give the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde its own character. Rendsburg’s old town dates back to the 13th century and is still defined by medieval buildings. The Jewish Museum is housed in Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest surviving synagogue; the building is both a historic monument and a memorial. Eckernförde is associated with the smoking of sprats and other small fish. The famous “Kiel sprats” actually come from the fishing town of Eckernförde.

In the district, the Molfsee Open-Air Museum offers, alongside its museum grounds, a historic funfair with two carousels, a ship swing and a high striker, as well as a large playground. These regional attractions complement Dörphof’s beach and nature experiences when planning a stay in the wider destination.
