Grevenkrug draws attention to its landscape and outdoor activities: part of the Eidertal bei Flintbek Landscape Protection Area lies to the east of the village, and the wooded Grevenkruger RĂĽcken bears the marks of the last Weichselian glacial period. The nearby natural area of the Eidertal adds another dimension. Different aspects of the surrounding area come together here: geological formations, protected landscapes and paths for walkers and cyclists.

Landscape between ridge and valley

The Grevenkruger Rücken is a terminal moraine formed during the last advance of the Weichselian glacial period. Its wooded slopes give the landscape a different character from the nearby Eidertal. The ridge’s formation and the valley’s present-day habitats offer nature enthusiasts two perspectives: one on how the terrain was shaped, the other on its diverse wetland and woodland areas. A terminal moraine is a ridge of material deposited by a glacier at its edge.

The nearby Eidertal is home to fens, wet woodlands, beech forests, springs, floodplains, kettle-hole bogs and wet meadows. The valley also provides a habitat for white-tailed eagles, kingfishers and corncrakes. This diversity makes the connection to the Eidertal a nature topic in its own right, alongside the wooded ridge: here, the focus is on habitats and their landscape.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The Eidertal circular trail is about 10 km long and suitable for walkers and cyclists. It links municipal paths between Reesdorf, Techelsdorf, Grevenkrug and Schmalstede. Information boards help you find your way, while rustic shelters and natural benches offer places to rest.

Its approximate length helps you work out how to fit the loop into your day. Check local conditions before setting out. Whether you travel on foot or by bike, you can plan the same loop to suit your own itinerary.

Accommodation and dining

The Auerhahn Hotel on LandesstraĂźe 318 offers accommodation and a large car park. The Hotel and Restaurant Auerhahn is right on the Eidertal hiking trail. Auerhahn offers several room categories; check availability for your dates before booking.

You can also visit the Auerhahn restaurant without staying overnight; a reservation may be required. It serves traditional, hearty home-style cooking. This means you can plan a restaurant visit independently of whether you decide to book a room.

Further perspectives in Rendsburg-Eckernförde

Looking at the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination opens up a much broader picture: the district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and includes four nature parks. It also has a signposted network of 1,000 kilometres of cycling routes, while the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail passes through all four parks. This gives you different scales to consider when planning your trip: the roughly 10-kilometre loop associated with Grevenkrug and the district-wide cycling and hiking options.
