Owschlag brings together themed circular trails, time by the water, and insights into the landscape and local history. This gives visitors several ways to plan their trip: you may be interested in getting active on hiking or cycling routes, enjoying the seasonal bathing season, or exploring nature and culture. Which of these aspects you most want to discover can also shape your choice of accommodation.

Circular Trails with Local Themes

Owschlag has a themed network of seven circular hiking trails and six circular cycling routes. Twenty-five information boards cover natural history, geography, archaeology, and village history. The project, implemented in 2021, is now well established. An overview board is located at the bus and train station; an orientation map is available from the municipality and the region’s tourist information offices. When planning your outings, you can choose between hiking and cycling while also exploring a range of topics.

At Lake Owschlag and in the Moorland

Southeast of Owschlag, a municipal bathing area is located on the shore of Lake Owschlag. The facilities include a meadow, a playground, a fire pit, a built-in barbecue, and a shelter. During the season, visitors can swim, sunbathe, and relax there; bathing-water quality is tested regularly throughout the season. The bathing area is therefore a seasonal highlight for days by the water.

The Owschlag Moor also represents another side of the landscape. It is part of the Binnendünen- und Moorlandschaft im Sorgetal bird sanctuary and is an important breeding habitat for birds. The red-backed shrike, crane, and common snipe are among the area’s bird species of conservation importance. Lake Owschlag is also part of the Owschlager See FFH conservation area, EU site number 1623-306. This lets you include water and moorland as distinct nature themes in your trip planning: the bathing area on one hand, and the importance of a protected habitat on the other.

History in Trails, Buildings, and Machinery

Historical traces can also be found in Owschlag’s names and dates. The Church of the Redeemer was dedicated on October 13, 1963. The road to Ramsdorf is called Pastor Jäger Stieg; its name commemorates Hans Jäger, Owschlag’s first regular pastor. The oldest bell associated with Owschlag’s church hall dates from 1606 and used to hang in the church hall. The municipality also has well-preserved sections of the Ochsenweg, a historic military and trade route.

De lĂĽtte Oldtimer SchĂĽĂĽn offers a distinct perspective on agricultural history. The private museum shows tractors and agricultural machinery from earlier times in active use; visitors can also watch old machinery being restored. Visits are by prior registration and appointment. The options for an outing are therefore quite distinct: the circular trails and the Ochsenweg are about getting active and following historic routes, while the museum offers insights into old agricultural machinery and its restoration.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When choosing accommodation in Owschlag, your preferred pace for the day can be a deciding factor. If you plan to spend time by the water, take the seasonal availability of the bathing area into account; advance registration is important for visiting the Oldtimer SchĂĽĂĽn. Hiking and cycling routes, the moorland, and local history provide further options. Consider whether time by the water, getting active, nature, or historical discoveries should shape your stay, and tailor your search to that focus.
