The places to visit here range from lakes and trails through varied landscapes to fruit-growing culture and history. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer to spend time by the water, explore nature trails or include cultural attractions.

Church, Windmill and Fruit-Growing Culture

Sörup’s sights include St Mary’s Church, dating from the 12th century, the “Renata” windmill in the district of Schwensby, and the “Pomarium Anglicum” fruit museum in the district of Winderatt. The three destinations offer different points of interest: medieval architectural history is followed by milling traditions and a collection focused on fruit. More than 700 different apple varieties and many other types of fruit have been collected at Pomarium Anglicum. The museum also includes a 4.1-hectare orchard. The size of the collection gives fruit-growing culture a tangible presence here, while extending beyond apples alone.

Two Lakes, Different Landscapes

The Südensee and Winderatter See lakes, together with adjoining biotope areas and a number of woods, shape the landscape of Sörup. Both lakes offer opportunities for swimming and fishing. Südensee was formed during the last Ice Age and covers around 63 hectares. This lake thus combines a readily understandable measure of its size with a history stretching far back in time.

The trails by the water also offer different experiences. The walk around Winderatter See leads from the car park along a field track into the woods, then continues on a signposted nature trail across the “Wilden Weiden” (Wild Pastures) of the Nature Conservation Foundation. A boardwalk runs through the Kielstau valley. By contrast, the walk around Südensee follows the shore, passing the bathing area and a playground. Südensee also has a modern natural bathing facility with a teaching pool. The woodland and valley landscape thus contrast with a route along the shore that takes in the bathing area; you can choose your outing based on the landscape you would like to experience.

From the Inland to the Baltic Coast

The Strawberry Tour offers another perspective: this 38-kilometre circular route connects the inland area of Sörup with the Baltic coast. It runs mostly along quiet roads and agricultural tracks and is signposted locally. Its geographical focus therefore differs from that of the trails around the individual lakes: the Strawberry Tour connects the inland with the coast, while the walks described above stay by their respective lakes. When planning your day, these are different ways to explore Sörup without limiting your options to a single type of landscape.

A Traditional Event in June

The traditional St John’s bonfire is celebrated by Südensee at the end of June, with games, fun and a large fireworks display. As an annual event, it complements the natural and cultural attractions with a festive occasion. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the specific event dates.

When choosing accommodation in Hörup, your preferred type of excursion can be a useful guide: lakeside walks and swimming, woods and valley scenery, the route connecting the inland to the Baltic coast, or an event at the end of June all appeal to different interests. First consider which of these sides of Sörup you would like to include in your travel plans, then look for suitable accommodation for your stay.
