Hürup offers a starting point for a trip that ranges from medieval architecture to landscapes and trails. Its varied attractions can help you structure your plans: should your trip focus mainly on cultural history, take in the natural scenery, or leave room for outdoor activities? This focus can also help you choose accommodation by making clear which themes you want to shape your days.

Church and history

St. Mary’s Church in Hürup was built as a brick church at the beginning of the 13th century. Inside is a wooden sequence of Passion scenes dating from around 1265. The building and the artwork offer distinct historical perspectives: the church represents medieval architecture, while the Passion scenes provide another specific focus for a visit. Further cultural sites in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination add to this perspective. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since June 2018. The Idstedt memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt.

Bodies of water and nature conservation

The landscape around Winderatter See and in the Kielstau area includes lakeshores, reed beds, sedge meadows, fens, hedgerows, small bodies of water, forests, meadows, pastures and farmland. More than 70 small bodies of water provide habitats for amphibians and waterbirds. This brings together damp waterside areas and open spaces in one landscape. Nature is protected and enhanced at Winderatter See and in the surrounding Kielstau area.

Treßsee is fed by the Bondenau and is considered the source of the Treene. The area along the Treene from Treßsee to Tüdal is part of the Upper Treene Landscape nature conservation project. The Düne am Treßsee nature reserve lies north of the lake. These places offer different nature-related themes: the lake as the source of the Treene, the course of the river and a designated conservation area.

Höckberg and outdoor trails

Höckberg is considered a local hill and stands 82 metres above sea level. In clear weather, it offers wide-ranging views over the surrounding landscape. A forest north of Höckberg has trails for walking and relaxation. There is also a 150-metre-high telecommunications tower on Höckberg. The views and forest trails offer two different reasons to plan time outdoors.

The 29-kilometre Uggelhardetour runs from Jarplund in the direction of Hürup and follows part of the historic Ox Road. The regional German Pilgrim Route runs from Flensburg via Oeversee, Schleswig and Kropp to Rendsburg. It can be walked in either direction and is also suitable for cycling.

Holmarksee Outdoor Swimming Facility

Holmarksee Outdoor Swimming Facility has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a small beach, a jetty and two diving platforms approximately one and three metres high. Facilities include changing rooms, restrooms, beach volleyball, sunbathing areas, a sand play area and a kiosk. This offers different ways to spend time: swimming, relaxing on the sunbathing areas, or playing and being active. If any particular facilities are especially important to you, check their current availability before your visit.
