Lürschau is particularly defined by Lake Arenholzer. A path runs around the lake; a bathing area is centrally located, and a kiosk operates at the bathing spot in summer. At the same time, a section of the historic Ochsenweg has been preserved in Lürschau in an almost original condition. Water, activity and history therefore offer distinct focal points.

The lake and local history

The circular path and bathing spot offer different ways to shape your visit: you can set aside time for a walk around the lake or focus your stay on the centrally located bathing area. The kiosk adds to the bathing spot in summer. If a stop at the kiosk is part of your plans, take its seasonal opening into account when planning your visit.

The Ochsenweg is another local highlight. A section of this historic route has been preserved in Lürschau in an almost original condition. This gives local history a tangible focus alongside the lake; if you enjoy combining landscapes with history, you can take both aspects into account when choosing your activities.

Cycling and wider natural landscapes

The “Auf dem Holzweg” themed cycling route covers a longer distance: it is about 57 kilometres long and passes through forests, lake landscapes and villages. Lake Arenholzer is also on the route, and one section is shared with the historic Ochsenweg. Those who want to combine cycling with nature and history will find a thematic combination here. As the exact route may be adjusted, it is worth checking the current route before setting off.

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers other distinctive natural highlights. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-developed paths and guided walks that share information about the flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. Holnis is also the northernmost point of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. Together, these offer two different ways to experience nature across the wider destination: guided insights into plant and animal life, or birdwatching in a striking landscape.

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also features a varied landscape. The district includes the Flensburg Fjord, with unspoilt steep coasts and beaches, as well as the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. The Schlei Nature Park features gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species. The coast, river landscape and Schlei thus represent different natural settings within the district.

Cultural history in Schleswig-Flensburg

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination is also well worth exploring for its culture and history. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danewerk still remain. In Idstedt, the historic memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. In Lürschau, the preserved section of the Ochsenweg offers a local historical connection; Haithabu, the Danewerk and Idstedt each provide their own focal points in the wider regional context.
