Olpenitz: Water Sports, the Baltic Sea and Maritime History
Accommodation in Olpenitz
Water sports, maritime history and excursions along the Schlei and the Baltic Sea shape the range of activities in Olpenitz. You can choose between exploring the water on your own, taking a SUP course, going on bike tours and visiting historic sites. There is also a practical option for families: OstseeResort Olpenitz has a gently sloping bathing cove that is suitable for families with children and relaxing days at the beach.
Experience the water: SUP, canoeing and fishing trips
If you would like to try stand-up paddleboarding, you can rent SUP boards at OstseeResort Olpenitz to explore on your own. You can make a reservation online or on site. The service is subject to the season and weather; check availability before making plans. Another option is the beginner SUP course, which teaches technique and safety. No prior experience is required, but participants must be able to swim. Check the course dates in advance.
The bathing cove is suitable for walks, building sandcastles, stand-up paddleboarding and sports classes. When planning, bear in mind that it can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. There is also a canoe launch site next to SchleimĂĽnde campsite in Olpenitz-Dorf for access to the Schlei. Fishing trips depart from the home port at OstseeResort Port Olpenitz at the mouth of the Schlei and head out onto the Baltic Sea and the Schlei. Check that the trips are available before you arrive.
The main difference between these options is how you want to get out on the water: with a rental board, you explore independently, while the course teaches technique and safety. The course requires participants to be able to swim; board rentals are subject to the season and weather.
Maritime history and special places
Gut Olpenitz includes a manor house dating from 1618. The estate is available as a venue for weddings and events. Another historic trace leads to the Olpenitz naval port, which was built between 1959 and 1964. A section of the Schlei inlet was separated from the Schlei and connected to the Baltic Sea by a new entrance.
The Schleimünde Lighthouse is located near Olpenitz. Since 1871, it has served ships as a leading and orientation light for entering the mouth of the Schlei from the Baltic Sea. The “Schleimündung” nature reserve is also nearby, beside the Schleidamm. It cannot be accessed from Ostseeresort Olpenitz. Harbour porpoises are occasionally spotted at OstseeResort Olpenitz, so sightings cannot be reliably planned.
Bike tours, hiking and leisure activities
The 53.1-kilometre “Round from Schönhagen” cycling route starts and ends at OstseeResort Olpenitz. It runs mainly along paved paths and connects Kappeln’s museum harbour and port, Gut Buckhagen, cycle paths along the Schlei, Kronsgaard Beach, the fishing village of Maasholm and the Schlei Bridge in Kappeln. The “Schönhagen Cliffs” hike also starts in Olpenitz.
For a maritime-themed round, Adventure-Golf Olpenitz at the resort has 18 obstacles inspired by the region. Pit Pat Olpenitz is an outdoor obstacle billiards game right by the Baltic Sea, with 18 tables. Check the opening details for these activities before your visit.
An excursion on the Schlei Princess runs from Kappeln via Maasholm to the Lotseninsel at SchleimĂĽnde and includes a 30-minute stop ashore. Check the current timetable before travelling. This makes it easy to compare the different options: a bike tour with a specified route length, an excursion with a clearly stated stop ashore, or activities on the water.
