Sollerup: Nature, Horse Riding and Culture
Accommodation in Sollerup
Sollerup combines a landscape close to nature with art, equestrian sports and a public canoe launch on the Treene. The landscape includes Büschau State Forest, the Jerrisbek and the Treene Valley. There are also seasonal exhibitions at the gallery in the Malerkate and horse-riding activities ranging from children’s riding to competitive equestrian sports. If you are looking for accommodation, first consider whether nature, water, horse riding or culture will shape your stay.
Natural Landscape and the Treene
Sollerup’s natural landscape is associated with Büschau State Forest, the Jerrisbek and the Treene Valley. There is also a public canoe launch on the Treene, with a rest area just below the road bridge. It includes an information board, seating and a canoe ramp; a toilet is a few hundred metres away in the direction of Sollerup. If you are planning to go canoeing, you can make note of this designated rest point and access to the Treene.
Gallery and Horse-Riding Activities
Sollerup offers a range of activities beyond the water, too. The gallery in the Malerkate hosts seasonal exhibitions, mainly featuring artists from Schleswig-Holstein; exhibitions have been held there since 1988. These changing exhibitions are part of the gallery’s profile. If you are travelling for the art, check which exhibition will be on during your planned visit.
Horse-riding activities range from children’s riding and ring riding to competitive equestrian sports. Facilities include an indoor riding arena, competition grounds and outdoor areas. The programme therefore encompasses several forms of riding. If you are travelling with children, you can include the explicitly listed children’s riding in your plans; those interested in competitive equestrian sports will find that on offer, too.
More to Explore in the Wider Schleswig-Flensburg Destination
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers further landscapes and history to explore. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the rampart still remain today. The Idstedt historical memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. This is a historical highlight to consider when planning a regional trip.
The wider destination also offers nature experiences. With a total area of 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks that share information about local flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species.
Schlei Nature Park showcases another regional landscape: gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields sit alongside sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Guided nature tours are offered there; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also run through the landscape.
