Discover Hammoor: Forests, moorland and cycling routes
Accommodation in Hammoor
Hammoor is above all a destination for its landscapes: several named woodland and grassland areas encompass the town together with other municipalities, alongside a former raised bog landscape. The ADFC cycling tour “Through Beimoor Forest” and Restaurant and Café Klassenzimmer offer further points of interest for cycling and regional cuisine.
Forests and moorland
The three named areas differ considerably in size and in the places they encompass. Nördlich Tiergarten is a 51-hectare landscape area that includes Ahrensburg and Hammoor. Rehbrook covers 49 hectares; Hammoor shares this woodland area with Lasbek and Tremsbüttel. The 159-hectare Beimoor/Forsttiergarten forest encompasses Hammoor, Ahrensburg, Großhansdorf and Todendorf. At 49 and 51 hectares, Rehbrook and Nördlich Tiergarten are similar in size; at 159 hectares, Beimoor/Forsttiergarten is more than three times the size of Rehbrook.
A variety of habitats
Hammoor is not just about forests. The town also includes a former raised bog landscape with diverse secondary vegetation in a varied, partly extensively managed grassland lowland. Rehbrook is considered a near-natural forest on a historic woodland site, with a relief-shaped mosaic of different forest communities and as a habitat for the great crested newt. Beimoor/Forsttiergarten is considered an area with comparatively near-natural wet forests of varying types. Nördlich Tiergarten is considered a landscape area with predominantly acidic forests and beech forests, as well as shallow excavated ponds surrounded by wet forests and alder-ash forests. Together, these areas offer a range of nature experiences: a former raised bog landscape and grassland lowland, as well as different types of forest and wetlands.
Cycling and regional cuisine
The ADFC cycling tour “Through Beimoor Forest” runs from Bargteheide via Hammoor and Beimoor Forest to Ahrensburg and Delingsdorf. Unlike the landscape areas, which Hammoor shares with other places, the tour has a defined route with several stops. This is a specific point of reference if you would like to plan your trip around cycling.
The local food scene can also be described specifically: Restaurant and Café Klassenzimmer combines modern cuisine with ingredients from Schleswig-Holstein. This regional culinary offering complements Hammoor’s landscape and cycling-tour themes.
Stormarn as a wider destination
The wider destination of Stormarn offers a broader setting than Hammoor alone. Stormarn has many circular walking routes, both short and long, as well as the Stormarnweg and the Way of St. James. There are also more than 20 circular cycling tours and rail-and-cycle routes along the tracks of three former railway lines. These regional routes complement the ADFC tour named in Hammoor with additional options for planning a broader trip.
The cultural history of Stormarn is also part of the wider destination: Ahrensburg Castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. This means that cultural attractions are also available for regional trip planning, alongside landscapes and cycling.
