Discover Finsterbergen
Accommodation in Finsterbergen
Finsterbergen showcases nature and local history in different ways: Hüllrod Spa Park is a natural recreation area on the edge of the high forest. The Church of the Holy Trinity has a specific restoration history, and TK 4 – the Finsterbergen Grand Circular Hiking Trail – passes along the nature trail to Brandleiteteich pond and along Hainfelsen rock. Parkland, hiking trails and historical themes are therefore at the heart of discovering the town.
Spa park and hiking trails in Finsterbergen
The natural recreation landscape of Hüllrod Spa Park shapes the view of Finsterbergen. TK 4 offers another way to explore the surrounding area: its route description takes you along the nature trail to Brandleiteteich pond and along Hainfelsen rock. Brandleiteteich pond is right next to the nature trail. The TK 4 trail marker is a green horizontal bar on a white background; check the markings on site. The well-known Rennsteig high-altitude trail is also close to Finsterbergen. The spa park, local circular hiking trail and nearby high-altitude trail thus offer different starting points for planning your time outdoors.
A local restoration history
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Finsterbergen was restored from 1974 to 1976. Before then, paintings and decorative designs had been whitewashed over and partially damaged by moisture. The restoration, with its precise dates, adds a cultural perspective to the nature-related attractions. When exploring Finsterbergen, you can include a piece of its architectural and local history in your travel plans, alongside the park and hiking trail.
More to discover in the wider destination of Friedrichroda
The wider destination of Friedrichroda also offers its own themes to explore when planning a trip. The Friedrichroda Marienglashöhle is a former mine dating from the 18th century. In its 110-metre-long tunnel, geological windows reveal rock strata millions of years old; in the Crystal Grotto, gypsum crystals up to 90 centimetres long sparkle. Mining history and geological discoveries can therefore be experienced side by side.
The Friedrichroda Local History Museum is housed in a restored half-timbered building at Reinhardsbrunner Straße 6. It explores the history of the town and region, from everyday life in past centuries to influential industries and traditions. The museum also includes a farrier’s workshop dating from 1750. At Bergtheater Friedrichroda, an open-air theatre at the foot of Gottlob with space for 700 guests, the programme includes concerts, theatre performances and musicals.
Those interested in mining history can also explore the Friedrichroda Mining Trail. It crosses the 572-metre-high Hausberg Gottlob; from Gottlob and Klinkenstein, there are views across the town and western Thuringian Forest. Former mine entrances, disused quarries and mining pits along the trail bear witness to a mining tradition spanning at least 400 years. An audio guide provides additional information. Another walking option with a specified distance is the circular trail through Reinhardsbrunn Palace Park: it is 3.4 kilometres long, rated easy and takes about 52 minutes. It starts and ends at Reinhardsbrunn Palace Park in Friedrichroda.
