Get to know Straufhain through recurring village festivals, museums covering a range of historical topics, and trails through the former mill landscape. The activities offer different highlights: music, food and market stalls at festivals; railway and regional history at the museum; and information boards along hiking trails. When planning your trip, consider whether an event, a museum visit, or time on foot and by bike is your priority.

Village festivals at different times of year

The Kühbergfest takes place every year in August. The program includes music, food from the bakehouse and grill, exhibitions, and market stalls. The Berglochfest falls on a different date: it is celebrated every year on the last Sunday in May in the village of Steinfeld, close to the Bergloch. This means two recurring events take place in different months and offer different options for planning your trip. Check the current events calendar and the dates for the relevant year when planning your stay.

Railway and border history

The railway museum in Seidingstadt covers the history of the Thuringian narrow-gauge railway from Hildburghausen via Heldburg to Friedrichshall. Visits are possible only by prior appointment, so arrange your visit with the museum before you arrive. This is an important distinction from a visit you could add to your daily itinerary without making arrangements in advance.

The Zweiländermuseum Rodachtal in Streufdorf presents the regional history of a border region. Together with the railway museum, it offers two different perspectives: the history of a narrow-gauge railway along the places mentioned, and the history of a border region. If you are interested in history, these topics offer distinct focuses rather than telling the same story.

Mill landscape and trails

There were nine mills in the Rodachtal area of the municipality of Straufhain. Today, almost all that remains of the historic sites is water infrastructure such as mill races and weirs; information boards at the former sites provide information about the mills. The Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Trail) has access points in Adelhausen, Steinfeld and Stressenhausen. An overview board stands at each access point. You can choose your starting point from these three places and use the relevant overview board for guidance on site. You will encounter the history of the mills both in the surviving water infrastructure and in the information provided at the former sites.

For a cycling tour, the Werra-Obermain cycle route runs through Hildburghausen (Markt), Stressenhausen, Streudorf, Heldburg, Lindenau, Gemünda, Seßlach, Kaltenbrunn and Wiesen. This sequence of places offers a different way to find your bearings than the access points for the Mühlenwanderweg. Check the route before setting out, as it may change.

Plan your stay around your interests

These differences can help you plan your trip around your interests: August or the last Sunday in May are relevant for festivals, while a prior appointment is required for the railway museum. Hiking and cycling offer further options to consider. First decide which of these experiences matter to you; then you can look for accommodation that suits your planned stay.
