Suhl offers travelers different ways to explore the starry sky, the town’s history and its hiking trails. The planetarium uses projections, while the observatory offers telescope observations led by knowledgeable guides. Museums focus on Suhl’s small arms and porcelain production, as well as vehicle manufacturing. Outdoors, a panoramic trail around Suhl and the Planet Trail offer different starting points. Suhl’s close proximity to the Rennsteig Trail is another factor to consider. Which of these aspects you want to shape your stay can be a helpful question to ask when choosing accommodation in Suhl.

Starry skies: projections and telescopes

The Suhl Planetarium uses a Zeiss Kleinplanetarium “Skymaster” to project around 6,000 fixed stars and the movements of the sun, moon and planets beneath an 8-meter dome. It has room for up to 56 visitors. The observatory offers observations led by knowledgeable guides, with a 40-cm Cassegrain reflector telescope and an 11-cm refractor available. The astronomical offerings are therefore quite distinct: the planetarium projects the starry sky, while the observatory offers telescope observations. Those interested in astronomy can consider these two different experiences when planning their stay.

Suhl’s history and vehicle manufacturing

The Suhl Weapons Museum presents nearly 600 years of small arms manufacturing in Suhl across three floors. A dedicated section offers insights into Suhl’s porcelain production, which played an important role between 1861 and 1930. The two subjects showcase different aspects of the town’s manufacturing history, each with its own period of focus.

The Suhl Vehicle Museum focuses on vehicle manufacturing: around 220 exhibits from all areas of the industry are on display across 1,100 m² of exhibition space. They include original Simson motorcycles ridden by European and world champions to their titles, as well as the legendary Greifzu racing car. The range of subjects thus extends from small arms and porcelain to vehicles and their significance in sport.

The Suhl Marionette Theater offers another kind of cultural experience. Visitors can enjoy marionette theater and see performers from near and far up close. If you have a particular performance date in mind, it is a good idea to check the current schedule.

Hiking trails and proximity to the Rennsteig

The Herbert Roth Hiking Trail is a panoramic trail around Suhl, the hometown of Herbert Roth. The Planet Trail is also one of the hiking routes associated with Suhl. This offers a choice between a panoramic trail around the town and the Planet Trail as another route in Suhl. The town’s close proximity to the Rennsteig is an additional geographical factor to consider when planning your stay.
