Arnstadt combines urban history with striking details: in the marketplace, the Bach Monument depicts the young Johann Sebastian Bach, casually leaning against a milestone. The Renaissance town hall also stands in the marketplace, its richly decorated façade occupying the north side of the square. Other highlights include historic church interiors, a palace museum and the prehistoric Alteburg on the southern edge of town. In Arnstadt, the history of music, architecture and the landscape come together.

Bach History and Architecture in the Marketplace

The Bach Monument depicts Johann Sebastian Bach as a young man—not in a stiff pose, but casually leaning against a milestone. The Renaissance town hall makes a very different architectural statement: it was built between 1582 and 1586. Its façade is defined by decorative gables and numerous ornamental details. Together, the monument and town hall tell different stories about Arnstadt’s history: one offers a tangible image of Bach, while the other showcases the design of a public building from the Renaissance.

Bach’s connection to the town extends beyond the monument. In August 1703, Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed organist at the New Church in Arnstadt, where he remained until 1707. The house at Kohlgasse 7 was also an important former residence of the Bach musician family. These sites provide a historical setting for the town’s musical heritage, without reducing Arnstadt’s history to Bach alone.

Church Interiors and Princely Collections

The Upper Church, also known as the BarfĂĽĂźerkirche, was built around 1250 and served as the Franciscan monastery church. Its features include a wooden barrel vault, an organ gallery dating from 1624 and two galleries along the south wall from the mid-17th century. The different structural elements point to several periods of construction and give the church interior its own architectural history.

The Palace Museum in the New Palace displays furniture and art treasures from the former princely collection in reconstructed Baroque rooms on the southern piano nobile. The “Mon plaisir” doll town offers a different perspective: visitors can walk through its houses and rooms on the ground floor of the southern corps de logis. The contrast between historic rooms and the detailed miniature homes creates two very different perspectives on life in the past.

Traces in the Townscape and on the Alteburg

The original palace tower stands 65 metres tall and is topped by a copper-clad cupola and a copper-clad spire. It underwent extensive restoration in 1998/99. The Alteburg, a fortified prehistoric hilltop settlement on a shell limestone plateau, lies on the southern edge of Arnstadt. Its slopes drop steeply on three sides. The settlement was inhabited during the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages and protected by ramparts and ditches. Two ramparts and remnants of an outer rampart remain. The Alteburg thus complements the town’s architectural history with a much older perspective on settlement and fortification.

The Jakobsturm also points to the town’s earlier history: it belonged to the former Church of St. James. The historic Way of St. James pilgrimage route passed through Arnstadt. Together with the former residence of the Bach musician family in Kohlgasse, this part of the townscape shows how different historical connections coexist.
