Elgersburg: springs and art history

Discover Elgersburg through its spring trails, castle and art history. The Short Spring Walk and the Long Spring Circular Walk offer two different route options for your stay; another themed route, the Edvard Munch Circular Trail, takes you to places where the artist made sketches for his Elgersburg paintings. You can plan your visit around whether you would like to focus on the springs or on the connection to Edvard Munch.

Elgersburg Castle dates back to 1088. Another landmark in its history is 1828, when Germany’s first cold-water health resort was founded in Elgersburg. Today, it is commemorated by a foot-wading pool, a cold-water shower, and numerous bubbling springs and fountains. These water features lie along the Spring Circular Trail. Choosing this route lets you combine springs, fountains and the two named water facilities with the local history of cold-water therapy.

Spring walks of different lengths

The Short Spring Walk around Elgersburg is 7 km long and takes about 2.5 hours. The Long Spring Circular Walk is 14.5 km long and offers places to stop for refreshments at three forest inns. The routes therefore differ both in length and in the considerations that shape your day: an approximate duration is given for the shorter walk, while the refreshment stops may be relevant for the longer one. Check the forest inns’ current opening hours before setting out.

If you are choosing between the two spring routes, the Short Walk comes with a clearly stated estimated duration; at more than twice the distance, the Long Walk offers a different framework. This information can help you plan your hiking day without assuming that both routes take the same amount of time. Together with the fountains and water features, the routes create a theme that connects Elgersburg’s history with a specific activity.

Edvard Munch’s footsteps in Elgersburg

The Edvard Munch Circular Trail takes you to places where Edvard Munch made sketches for his Elgersburg paintings. This offers a different perspective from the spring routes, focusing on places associated with his work. If you are interested in art history, you can make this trail a focus of your plans in its own right, rather than treating it as the same experience as the spring walks.

From April to November, a guided Munch walk was scheduled for 10 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Check current dates before your trip. This lets you distinguish between walking the spring routes independently and joining the guided option, without assuming that the scheduled walk is always available.

More trails in the wider Ilm-Kreis travel destination

The wider Ilm-Kreis travel destination offers other independent trail ideas with different themes. The Kleinbreitenbach Art Trail is two kilometers long; artworks adorn the Romanesque fortified church, the cemetery, the church forecourt, the village and the path at the edge of the village. The 21-kilometer Mushroom Trail offers a longer route: it leads from Gehren via the Langer Berg to the European Mushroom Park in Gillersdorf, then continues through the Reicheltal valley to Neustadt am Rennsteig. The Goethe Hiking Trail links landscapes of the Thuringian Forest with places where Goethe worked in Ilmenau and the surrounding area, as far as StĂĽtzerbach.

These examples from the Ilm-Kreis are quite distinct: the Art Trail features artworks at locations around the village, the Mushroom Trail follows a named 21-kilometer route, and the Goethe Hiking Trail connects landscapes with places where Goethe worked. For your travel plans, this gives you a choice between Elgersburg’s local focus on springs and Munch’s footsteps, and other themed trails in the wider Ilm-Kreis travel destination.
