Sondershausen: Castle, Forest and Trails
Accommodation in Sondershausen
Sondershausen combines cultural history with outdoor experiences. At the castle museum, you can explore the former residence of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen; hiking, cycling and riding trails run around the town. The Possen leisure and recreation park is another attraction, set in one of Europe’s largest continuous beech forest areas.
Castle Museum and Musical Tradition
Sondershausen Castle Museum is housed in the former residence of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. It has a small, carefully selected collection of historical musical instruments connected with the town’s musical tradition. The museum therefore brings together a distinct collection focus and the history of the castle.
The Harz Tourism Association offers a free multimedia guide to the grounds around the castle. It leads visitors to eight stops around the castle in German and English. In addition to the museum visit, the stops make the castle’s surroundings a subject for exploration; when planning, you can choose between the two language versions.
Trails around Sondershausen
Many well-marked hiking, cycling and riding trails run around Sondershausen. Routes pass through Kyffhäuser Nature Park and the Hainleite landscape conservation area. This gives you several ways to make outdoor activities the focus of your visit. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out on a specific route.
One clearly defined example is the Frauenberg Trail in Sondershausen: a 1.6-kilometre family adventure trail with seven different activity stations. Its length and number of stations give you two specific points of reference for planning. The trail is a standalone option alongside the wide range of hiking, cycling and riding trails around the town.
Beech Forest and Seasonal Outdoor Pool
The Possen leisure and recreation park is located in one of Europe’s largest continuous beech forest areas. This landscape provides a different focus from the castle museum and the town’s musical tradition. If you would rather plan your trip around nature than history, the beech forest is a distinctive part of what Sondershausen has to offer.
Bergbad Sonnenblick is a seasonal municipal outdoor pool and is currently closed until the next swimming season. Its facilities include a 50-metre pool, diving platforms at heights of one and three metres, a water slide, a paddling pool, a playground and a beach volleyball court. If you are planning a day of swimming, take this closure into account when choosing your travel dates.
In the wider Kyffhäuserkreis destination
The Barbarossa Cave is also part of the wider Kyffhäuserkreis destination. The anhydrite cave lies between the villages of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865 in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. The cave was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa’s return. Here, a geological landmark, mining history and a well-known legend come together in a specific place.
In the wider Kyffhäuserkreis destination, the Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers guided tours year-round at a depth of 670 metres. These include an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. The mine is also home to the world’s deepest concert hall, where concerts and cabaret performances are held regularly. For planning your trip, this offers a different focus from the castle, beech forest and trails around Sondershausen.
