A castle ruin almost 900 years old, perched on a porphyry cone: the remains of Hohnstein Castle rise above Neustadt/Harz. Here, a striking connection to the landscape meets a long history. There is also nature education, a Kurterrainweg trail and named historic sites.

Nature and exercise

The South Harz Nature Park Information Centre is located in the “Haus des Gastes” in Neustadt. The “Harz erfrischend” exhibition invites children and adults to take part. Through interactive activities, it introduces geology, including gypsum and karst, as well as the region’s flora and fauna. For families, the hands-on exhibition offers a tangible shared point of interest; its topics range from landforms to local nature. If you are planning a visit, check the latest opening information in advance.

Kurterrainweg 1 is a certified trail just under two kilometres long. It runs through the spa park and around Neustadt’s gondola pond. According to its description, it is designated “The Easy One,” is mostly level, is suitable for almost every fitness level and places only a gentle strain on the cardiovascular system. The trail’s length, terrain and described level of exertion can therefore all help you plan your walk.

The route description also notes the firm surface and says the trail is safe to walk even in changeable weather. Benches along the way invite you to pause and enjoy “forest bathing.” The walk is therefore about more than exercise: it also offers opportunities to take a break and spend time mindfully in the forest.

Historic landmarks

St. George’s Church in Neustadt is designated a historic site, while the Neustadt Roland is a monument. Together with the castle ruins, these represent different forms of historic heritage: a church, a monument and the remains of a castle. They give visitors interested in culture several named points of interest to guide their exploration of the town.

Harztor: landscape and regional history

The wider destination of Harztor offers topics ranging from landscapes to regional history. The Bere Valley is a nature reserve with numerous rock formations and wooded areas, extending as far as Netzkater. In Ilfeld, the local history museum has dedicated exhibition areas featuring exhibits on industry and crafts, as well as school locations. A small model railway of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways is also on display, and the museum gallery presents an exhibition on the geology and mineralogy of the local area. In the wider Harztor area, natural landscapes sit alongside different aspects of local and technological history. In the broader destination of Harztor, numerous half-timbered houses and St. George’s Church also shape the townscape of Neustadt/Harz.
