Hermsdorf combines half-timbered houses, festive traditions and technological history with an outdoor pool. The historic townscape and recurring events reveal different sides of the town, from regionally characteristic half-timbered houses to a technical monument.

Half-timbered Houses and Living Traditions

The historic street “Alte Regensburger” conveys a regionally characteristic atmosphere with its half-timbered houses. The annual Maypole raising is also part of the tradition in the Holzland and in several other places in the region. The first Maypole raising in Hermsdorf took place in 1854.

Since 1993, the Hermsdorf Street Festival has taken place every year on Open Monument Day, the second Sunday in September. Numerous craftspeople demonstrate traditional crafts, alongside an extensive cultural program. There are plenty of activities for young visitors to watch and take part in. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year.

The History of Technology in Town

A striking technical monument is HESCHO’s 40 kW high-power measuring transmitter, which has been included on the list of objects worthy of protection. It remains at its original location on the ground floor of a building at Eisenberger Straße 81, now used as a medical center. Guided tours of the transmitter are available, with technical explanations. If required, an insulator flashover can be demonstrated using a 100 kV AC system. The technical exhibit is open every year during the Hermsdorf Street Festival, “Alte Regensburger Straße.”

Another place to visit for those interested in technology is the Hermsdorf Technical Collection in the Historic Town Hall at Eisenberger StraĂźe 56. The entrance is at the left-hand side entrance; tours of the collection are available by arrangement. The town hall has been standing for over 100 years. Its Baroque exterior still largely resembles its appearance when it opened more than 115 years ago. Hermsdorf thus brings together different historical perspectives: large-scale technology and a town hall whose exterior reaches far back in time.

Water and Activity at the Outdoor Pool

The Hermsdorf outdoor pool has a 25-meter swimming pool and a leisure pool with a large water slide, current channel, water jets and fountains. A beach volleyball court and a table tennis table round out the facilities on the sunbathing lawn. This offers different ways to enjoy the pool: swimming lanes, moving water and space for activities on land. Check the opening hours in advance for a specific day at the pool.

Getting a Sense of the Townscape, Accommodation and Travel

Old Hermsdorf is characterized by restaurants and accommodation in carefully renovated historic buildings. Its location on major transport routes offers another point of reference: the A4 motorway from Dresden to Frankfurt am Main and the A9 motorway from Berlin to Munich intersect near Hermsdorf. When choosing where to stay, you can consider the townscape and long-distance travel as separate factors.

The Wider Saale-Holzland Destination

The wider Saale-Holzland destination also has its own landscape and cultural themes. The Holzland is a hilly landscape with extensive forest areas. The SaaleHorizontale is a quality hiking trail that runs north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district; the Saale Cycle Route also follows the river through the district in a north-south direction. The two routes offer different regional perspectives on hiking and cycling.

Cultural destinations in Saale-Holzland include the Dornburg Castles, a complex of three castles from different stylistic periods. The permanent exhibition at the Bürgel Ceramics Museum illustrates the history of Bürgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. This lets you look beyond Hermsdorf’s half-timbered houses, traditions and technology to explore other themes across the wider destination.
