Tautenhain: Half-Timbered Houses, Forest and the History of the Cannon
Accommodation in Tautenhain
Half-timbered houses with red tile roofs shape the townscape of Tautenhain; some have been carefully restored. At the same time, the village lies in the forest-rich Thuringian Holzland, which offers many hiking opportunities. Visible local history and paths through a forested landscape come together here, offering two distinct themes to consider when planning a trip.
A Cannon and Local History
The name of the “Zur Kanone” inn comes from a defective cannon left behind by Napoleonic troops in 1806 on their way to the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt. A replica of the so-called “forgotten” cannon can be seen at the inn. Another facet of local history is the listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John: it was built as a hall church in 1743, incorporating older structural elements.
The church’s features include a gallery running around the interior, a painted wooden-beam ceiling and a carved baptismal angel in the altar area. The organ has its own history, too: it dates from 1878 and was built by Friedrich Ladegast. Anyone interested in architectural history and craftsmanship will find several tangible points of interest in Tautenhain, from the half-timbered houses in the townscape to the furnishings of St. John’s.
Forest, Trails and Landscape
Tautenhain is a good starting point for hikes and bike rides through the Eisenberg Mill Valley. The village is also a starting point for trails into the Elster Valley towards Bad Köstritz and into the Zeitzgrund towards Stadtroda. The Eisenberg Mill Valley is a Flora-Fauna-Habitat protected area in the forest between Tautenhain, Rüdersdorf, Oberndorf and Bad Klosterlausnitz.
Local hiking boards also combine exercise with local history. The “Berthas Ruh” loop runs around Tautenhain and provides information about the village’s history on two hiking boards. Four hiking boards provide information about Tautenhain along the “Nistkastenrunde” (Nest Box Loop). The number of boards may change; if you want to plan your route around them, check the information in advance.
Festivals and Excursion Destinations
Recurring events include the Maypole Raising, which is known beyond the region. This also includes a children’s Maypole Raising—one specific detail to consider when planning an event together. The Cannon Festival takes place every September at the “Zur Kanone” restaurant in Tautenhain. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year.
Nearby excursion destinations include Eisenberg Castle Church, the Alfred Brehm Memorial in Renthendorf, the local history museum in Bad Klosterlausnitz and the Ceramics Museum in Bürgel. Other options include the watermill at Hainbücht near Stadtroda, the Heinrich Schütz House in Bad Köstritz and the Köstritzer Schwarzbier Brewery. This makes it possible to combine your time in Tautenhain with a range of destinations in the surrounding area, without losing sight of the local trails and history.
Getting Here and Finding Accommodation
Tautenhain can be reached via the A4, Hermsdorf Ost exit, and the A9, Bad Klosterlausnitz exit. The village is also on the LIO75 country road between Bad Klosterlausnitz and Bad Köstritz. When choosing a destination as a base, you can weigh up whether hiking and bike rides, local history or the date of a festival is the deciding factor.
More to Explore in the Saale-Holzland Region
Other cultural and landscape attractions broaden the range of options across the wider Saale-Holzland travel region. The Dornburg Palaces form an ensemble of three palaces from different architectural periods. The permanent exhibition at the BĂĽrgel Ceramics Museum illustrates the history of BĂĽrgel pottery from its beginnings in the mid-17th century to the present day. Regional routes include the SaaleHorizontale and the Saale Cycle Route, which run north to south along the Saale through the Saale-Holzland district; well-maintained hiking trails also lead through the Zeitzgrund.
