Schmalkalden: Half-timbered houses, the Reformation and nougat
Accommodation in Schmalkalden
Schmalkalden brings together the stories of half-timbered houses and the Reformation, along with special insights into historic craftsmanship and nougat production. In the old town, churches, houses and museums lead you through different chapters of the city’s history; the Viba Nougat-Welt offers a delicious counterpoint. This lets you shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Half-timbered houses and Reformation history
Wilhelmsburg Castle rises above the old town. A permanent exhibition explores the time of Martin Luther and the Schmalkaldic League. St. George’s Town Church is also closely connected with this history. Construction began in 1413/14, incorporating parts of an earlier Romanesque church. At the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League in 1537, the leading theologians of the time preached here; Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles there. The castle and town church thus represent different yet interconnected aspects of the city’s history.
At the Wilhelmsburg Castle Museum, areas open to visitors include magnificent ceremonial halls, the richly decorated castle church, and original room layouts with wall paintings and stucco work. The gentlemen’s kitchen and the terrace garden are also included. The castle church is also home to a historic wooden-pipe organ that can still be played. Before your visit, it is advisable to check current opening hours and access information.
The Historicum Pewter Figure Museum offers a different view of history: across 400 square metres, it displays more than 20,000 fully three-dimensional, hand-painted pewter figures in recreated scenes from world history. The sheer number of figures and the scenes provide a distinct counterpoint to Schmalkalden’s historic rooms and buildings.
The Lutherhaus Schmalkalden is a half-timbered house built around 1520. At the half-timbered house experience centre, you can explore vaulted cellars, living rooms, stairways and a crawlspace, as well as façade, masonry and wall structures, the front building and the courtyard. Along the way, you can discover the interplay of historic and modern architecture. The experience centre is described as Schmalkalden’s oldest half-timbered house and is also one of the five oldest half-timbered houses in Thuringia.
Craftsmanship, the blast furnace and nougat
At the Neue Hütte, the excellent state of preservation of the early industrial blast-furnace complex means that it can still be understood as a whole. Visitors can walk all the way around the original furnace and climb to a height of more than eleven metres. The focus here is not on a single object, but on a complex whose layout can be experienced in person.
The Viba Nougat-Welt offers a very different insight into production. Through a glass-walled manufactory, you can watch smooth, meltingly tender nougat being made. Visitors can also make their own chocolates, chocolate or a classic nougat bar in various workshops. This adds a hands-on, taste-focused experience to your impressions of Schmalkalden. Check current course and booking details before visiting.
Guided tours and ways to explore
Public guided tours of the historic old town are offered from April to October. Confirm the dates and departure details in advance with the Tourist Information Centre. If you would rather follow a set route, you can take the “Around Wilhelmsburg” circular trail: it starts at Altmarkt, passes the Lutherhaus and climbs up to Wilhelmsburg Castle. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
If you are mainly interested in architecture and city history, the half-timbered houses, town church and castle each offer a different historical perspective. If you would also like to learn about production processes, you can include the Neue Hütte and the glass-walled nougat manufactory. Think about which of these experiences you would like to define your stay, and choose accommodation to suit your own travel plans.
