Discover Sömmerda: City History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Sömmerda
Sömmerda tells its story on several levels: in the city park, at the old town fortifications and in a museum about industrial development. There are also mill and market traditions, as well as cycling and hiking routes that offer different ways to plan a trip. This lets you organize city history, technology, archaeology and outdoor activities according to what interests you most.
City Gardens and Medieval Fortifications
The city park was created as a public garden and opened at Whitsun in 1903. The listed Erfurter Tor takes you further back in time: according to chronicle records, it was built in 1395 as a city entrance within the existing fortifications. It was one of the first of five city gates in the town wall, which was expanded from 1589 onwards. Thanks to continuous restoration and repairs, the historic wall is well preserved.
If you would like to explore the fortifications beyond a single building, ask the Sömmerda Tourist Information Office about a walking tour. It arranges customized tours with guides along the town wall and past some of the city’s most beautiful places and sights. The tour puts Erfurter Tor in the broader context of the wall and the city.
Industrial History, Museums and the Woad Mill Tradition
The Historical and Technical Museum explores Sömmerda’s 200 years of industrial development. Its story runs from the founding of the Dreyse gun factory, through Rheinmetall’s production sites, to the office machine factory in the former East Germany. These exhibits address different chapters of the city’s history rather than reducing its industrial past to a single period.
Another tradition is represented by the woad mill in the village of Rohrborn, which has been restored to its original condition. At the annual Mill Day on Whit Monday and the Woad Mill Festival in August, woad is ground there as it was in the past, and visitors can learn about the old tradition. In Kölleda, a local history museum and a radio technology museum add to the selection of museums. A much older story is told at the Bilzingsleben Fossil Site: this former travertine quarry in the district of Sömmerda was a campsite of Homo erectus bilzingslebenensis around 370,000 years ago.
Weekly markets are also part of local life. Local producers sell regional foods such as fruit and vegetables, sausages and other meat products, fish, baked goods and cheese; many products are organic. If you plan to visit a market, it is best to check the current market days in advance.
Cycling and Hiking Routes as Distinct Highlights
Several routes offer different perspectives on the surrounding area. The Laura Cycle Route connects the Ilmtal Cycle Route in Weimar with the Unstrut Cycle Route near Schallenburg in Sömmerda. The Finnebahn Cycle Route follows the former Finnebahn railway line and runs between Kölleda and Rastenberg, along streams on the northern edge of the Thuringian Basin. A section of the 91.7-kilometer Finne Hiking Trail also starts in Rastenberg and can be walked as a circular route.
There are dedicated circular routes, a geological nature trail and cycling routes starting at the town hall or the outdoor swimming pool in Rastenberg; they lie within the Finne Landscape Protection Area. The Time Travel Trail offers a different combination of an outing and learning stops: it connects the Leubinger Fürstenhügel rest area on the A 71 with the Fürstenhügel Leubingen. Its exhibits and stops explain historical, archaeological and geographical connections.
For days spent enjoying activities on the water, the 66-hectare Alperstedter See in the district of Sömmerda offers opportunities for camping, swimming, sailing, surfing, paddling, relaxing and dining. The lake is connected to the long-distance and regional cycling network in Central Thuringia, making trips to places such as Erfurt, Sömmerda and Weimar possible. Sightseeing, routes and lake activities each offer a different focus, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one kind of outing.
Getting There and Choosing a Base
Sömmerda is connected to the regional and long-distance transport network via the B 85 between Weimar and Bad Frankenhausen, the B 176 between Bad Langensalza and Naumburg, and the A 71 between Erfurt and Sangerhausen. The exits are called Sömmerda-Süd and Sömmerda-Ost. Regional train services run between Erfurt and Sangerhausen and between Straußfurt and Großheringen; there are also numerous bus connections to neighboring towns. Check current timetables when planning your journey and day trips.
Then choose a base that suits your selected destinations and the transport connections that matter for your stay.
