Apolda combines a long history of bell-making with a garden monument and a multifaceted urban history. This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: bells and the textile industry, Apolda Castle and the Herressener Promenade.

Bells and textiles: Apolda’s industrial history

Bell founding in Apolda began in 1722 with Johann Christoph Rose. It ended in 1988 when the last bell foundry closed. These dates span a defining local craft tradition and provide a clear timeframe for the town’s history.

The GlockenStadtMuseum Apolda focuses on bell archaeology, bells from past cultures, the development of the bell founder’s trade, and the history of Apolda’s bell foundries. Many of the bells on display can be rung. The history of the knitting and hosiery industry is also part of the museum: it is illustrated through the development of a renowned company, as well as machinery, samples and clothing. Craft and the textile industry thus stand alongside one another as two distinct aspects of local industrial history.

For planning your visit, please note: the main site of the GlockenStadtMuseum is closed for renovation, and the textile exhibition is temporarily closed. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Garden monument and urban history

The Herressener Promenade is a garden monument with several distinct areas. The urban-style Lohteich pond features a city terrace, while the naturalistic Friedensteich pond has a water-lily balcony. There is also a festival meadow. A main circular path and several smaller paths provide access to the promenade. The combination of designed spaces and paths offers a different focus from the exhibitions and urban history.

Apolda Castle also tells a story of long development: the origins of the former castle from which it evolved date back to the 10th or 11th century. The four-wing complex contains building elements spanning 800 years. A visit to the castle can therefore be considered a historical focus in its own right, while the promenade draws attention to garden design.

A monument in Apolda commemorates the Dobermann dog breed and its origins in the town. It adds another local feature to the major themes of bell founding and the castle’s history.

Events throughout the year

The events calendar also brings seasonal highlights. The annual Oldtimer-Schlosstreffen takes place in Apolda on the first weekend in June and attracts classic car enthusiasts from across Germany. The annual Zwiebelmarkt follows in September. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates before making arrangements. Their different times of year can help you choose your stay based on the event you would like to attend.

More routes in the Weimarer Land

The wider Weimarer Land travel region offers additional themes. The Thüringer Drei Türme Weg is a circular hiking trail in the southern Weimarer Land and passes through the protected landscape of the Middle Ilm Valley. It connects the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, the Hainturm in the Belvederer Forst near Weimar, and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain. This gives it a landscape focus distinct from Apolda’s urban and industrial history.

The Goethe-Erlebnisweg connects Weimar and Großkochberg, follows Goethe’s route to Charlotte von Stein, and features twelve nature and culture experience stops. For another specific route option, Stage 25 of the Lutherweg in the Weimarer Land runs from Weimar to Apolda. These regional trails are independent options to consider when planning your trip in the Weimarer Land. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Apolda as a starting point for your accommodation search

If you would also like to include routes in the Weimarer Land, decide on your specific destinations and the relevant dates before organizing your stay. This lets you choose accommodation based on your planned experiences, without combining town visits, events and regional routes into a single excursion itinerary.
