Three different buildings shape the view of Gadernheim: a half-timbered town hall dating from the early 17th century, a forge that is still in operation and a granite church built in 1913. Together, they give local history and architecture a distinct local focus. The wider destination of Lautertal (Odenwald) adds its own hiking trails, viewpoints and landscape features. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different aspects separate and prioritising them according to your interests.

Gadernheim’s buildings and their history

The former Gadernheim town hall is a half-timbered building constructed between 1617 and 1619. Today, it houses a local history museum with a collection on the village’s history and rocks from the surrounding area. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Alongside local history, the rocks are another distinct focus of the collection.

The historic Roß forge is one of the protected monuments and is still operating as a forge. The oldest documented mention of the village is linked to the construction of the forge and dates to 1608. The Metzendorf Church was built in 1913 in the regional style, using Gadernheim granite. Its design includes a granite façade, sandstone details and wooden shingles; the original interior is well preserved. The town hall, forge and church thus represent different building styles and periods. If you are travelling with children, the different materials can offer a practical starting point for conversation: half-timbering, granite, sandstone and wooden shingles can be matched to the buildings.

Lautertal (Odenwald): trails, views and culture

In the wider destination of Lautertal (Odenwald), the Kaiserturm stands on Neunkirchener Höhe, the highest point in Lautertal. The 34-metre-high tower was built of stone in 1906/07 and commemorates Kaiser Wilhelm I; it was preceded by a wooden tower. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit Krehberg between Seidenbuch and Schannenbach, where there are several viewpoints and numerous shorter and longer hiking trails. From Seidenbacher Eck, the panorama stretches across the Odenwald from northeast to southwest. This offers a choice between the hiking trails and viewpoints at Krehberg and the far-reaching view from Seidenbacher Eck.

Striethteich lies between Elmshausen and the “Selterswasserhäuschen.” Numerous waterbirds have their own island there. On the shore stands a water-powered model of the Deichertsmühle mill. The pond festival is held at Striethteich every year on Father’s Day. Nature watching, the mill model and an annual event date give this place a range of distinct attractions.

The hiking trails in Lautertal also vary in route and length. The digital “12-Dörfer-Rundwanderweg Lautertal” (12 Villages Circular Hiking Trail Lautertal) is 41.32 kilometres long and passes through all the districts of Lautertal; it is not marked on the ground. The “Roter Strich” (Red Stripe) passes through Elmshausen by Striethteich and climbs to the ridge between Felsberg and Amalienhöhe. This lets you distinguish a digital circular route through all the districts from a trail with named points along its route.

On the Felsenmeer Circular Trail L1, the steepest climb is between Kuralpe and the summit of Felsberg, where the Ohlyturm stands. The Felsenmeer Information Centre offers guided tours on the geological formation of the Felsenmeer. The route and the tour topic have different focuses: one concerns the location of the steepest climb, the other the geological formation.

If you are travelling with your family and want to combine different interests, you can distinguish Gadernheim’s architectural history from the hiking and viewpoint highlights in the wider Lautertal (Odenwald).
