Grifte at the confluence of the Eder and Fulda

The Eder Cycle Route passes through Grifte at the confluence of the Eder and Fulda. The route recommends stopping here before continuing about two kilometres farther to Baunatal-Guntershausen and the Fulda Cycle Route/R1. This makes it easy to include Grifte as a break point in your tour plan. The distance of about two kilometres is an approximate guide to the route. Check the latest route information before setting off.

Another specific point of reference is the 2.3-kilometre section of the Eder Cycle Route between Wolfershausen and Grifte. It was officially opened on 22 July 2023; there is a rest area for cyclists along the route. The 2.3 kilometres refers to this section, not the entire route. This gives you a clearly defined distance for planning a ride on part of the route. Check the conditions on the path before setting off.

Path conditions and route characteristics

The Eder Cycle Route as a whole includes quiet farm tracks and sections of a former railway line with an asphalt surface. Natural surfaces and asphalt alternate, along with gentle climbs. The route is generally considered suitable for cyclists. When planning the Eder Cycle Route, you can take its varied surfaces and gentle elevation profile into account.

Other perspectives in the wider destination of Edermünde

Another cycling option in the wider destination of Edermünde is the “Stadt-Land-Fluss” circular tour. It runs from Edermünde to Kassel and back, along the Eder and Fulda. The starting point is Edermünde-Grifte railway station; from there, the tour follows the Eder Cycle Route towards Guntershausen. It passes through typical North Hessian half-timbered villages and by farm shops as well as small, cosy inns. Unlike the stretch of the Eder Cycle Route through Grifte, “Stadt-Land-Fluss” is a circular tour—a useful distinction if you plan your cycling according to the type of route.

In the wider destination of Edermünde, the “Centre of Germany” stele stands in Besse, in a meadow on the edge of the Langenberge hills. From there, the view stretches across the Chattengau as far as the Söhre hills. A basalt stele about three metres high marks the spot; it is clearly visible from a small rest area with a bench and information board. The stele can be reached via the Habichtswald Nature Park hiking car park on Röder Weg in Besse.

Haldorf is also part of the wider destination of Edermünde and combines scenery with local history. The Haldorf horse grave lies above Wolfershausen in the woods within Haldorf’s municipal area. The inscription on the weathered stone reads: “Here rest Bella and Rosa, 13 February 1868”. The grave can be reached via the Ederhöhenweg, from Haldorf in the direction of Wolfershausen, near Amselhof. The Hirtenhaus in Haldorf houses a local history museum with a permanent exhibition of objects from village life. The house was built in 1726; the last shepherd lived there until his death in 1948.
