The ruins of Obernburg Castle tower high above Gudensberg. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Chattengau region and the North Hessian countryside. Opposite Schlossberg rises the 381-metre-high Odenberg, a basalt hill topped by an observation tower that is more than 100 years old. The two heights offer contrasting features: Obernburg combines the ruins with sweeping panoramic views, while the basalt formation and observation tower shape the landscape at Odenberg.

History and culture in the town

The small preacher’s house, built in 1786, has found a place again in the Old Cemetery in Gudensberg’s old town, after standing in the town church for 40 years. The Prison Tower is the last surviving tower of Gudensberg’s medieval town fortifications. It served as a dungeon; its cell could only be accessed through an opening above. The Hospital of the Holy Spirit reflects another historical function: it was built in 1365 for people with leprosy. Together, the buildings illustrate different chapters of the town’s history: a building that changed location, the medieval fortifications and a hospital with its original purpose.

A permanent exhibition in the gallery of the Kulturhaus Synagoge documents Gudensberg’s Jewish history. Art can also be found throughout the town: bronze sculptures by Carin Grudda, an artist born in Gudensberg, stand at various locations in the town centre. The Märchenbühne has a large outdoor stage with seating for 250 spectators. The “Journey Back to the Middle Ages” festival is also held at Obernburg once a year. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the current events calendar before travelling.

Hiking trails and special experiences

The Gudensberg Panorama Trail is a challenging circular hiking route. This high-level trail links viewpoints on Schlossberg, Lamsberg, Odenberg, Kammerberg, Günthersberg, Nenkel and Nacken with almost all the sights in Gudensberg’s old town, shaped by its medieval past. The ARS NATURA Gudensberg Circuit has a different focus: it is an art trail and connects to the long-distance X8 “Barbarossa Trail” near Cappel, a district of Fritzlar. The two routes therefore differ in their stated focus: the Panorama Trail brings together viewpoints and sights, while the Gudensberg Circuit is classified as an art trail.

A donkey-trekking tour with the Schlossberg Long-Ears includes a hike lasting several hours and a picnic in the countryside; the animals carry the luggage. Check the current availability of tours directly with the provider. The Terrano indoor and natural swimming pool complex includes an indoor pool with a toddlers’ area and sauna facilities, as well as an outdoor natural pool without chemical additives. The Terrano indoor and natural swimming pool complex is currently affected by closures and renovation work. Check its current status before visiting.

Another look at the Schwalm-Eder district

The wider destination of the Schwalm-Eder district includes upland landscapes around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges. The Schwalm Cycle Route offers another regional perspective: it is around 100 kilometres long and runs to the Schwalm’s confluence with the Eder, just before Felsberg in the Schwalm-Eder district. For the most part, it follows paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes featuring meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns. Route conditions can change; check the latest information before setting off.
