Discover Welferode
Accommodation in Welferode
Welferode displays its rural character in the town center: the character of a farming village has been preserved there to this day. The historic center lies south of Preßnitzer Straße (L 3254); several large farmsteads are grouped along Knüllstraße around the church. The first documentary mention of the village dates back to 1196. Its village structure and long history give a visit a clear focus, without reducing Welferode to a single attraction.
Bakehouse, village café and highland rock
The events program includes a bakehouse group that prepares its baked goods for baking in the old bakehouse. The focus is therefore on preparing and baking together, not just on a finished product. The Hochlandrock Festival was launched in 2001 as an open-air festival in Welferode, a district of Homberg. The site of the annual festival is a meadow with panoramic views of the North Hessian countryside; the exact location may vary from one edition to another. The shift from the bakehouse group to the open-air festival showcases different sides of local event life. Check the dates for the relevant Hochlandrock edition before planning around it.
An announcement dated May 8, 2026, lists the village café as an offering held every two weeks and as an open meeting place, regardless of age or background. Before visiting, check the current calendar and confirm whether the café is taking place.
Routes through the countryside
A route to the Mosenberg passes through a nature reserve and leads to the summit. One route to the Mosenberg near Homberg (Efze) follows field paths toward Welferode through the small Hopfenberg forest. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Homberg/Efze as the wider travel destination
The wider travel destination of Homberg/Efze offers additional cultural and landscape highlights. St. Mary’s Church is a Gothic, three-aisled hall church; construction began around 1340. The Homberg Synod was held there in 1526, which is why the church is also known as the Reformation Church. Hohenburg Castle stands on a basalt cone above Homberg/Efze and offers views as far as Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Its castle well was once sunk 150 meters into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany; a lighting system and an automatic water mechanism illustrate its depth.
Nature and outdoor activities are also part of the wider travel destination: Lochbachklamm lies between Wallenstein and Homberg-Hülsa. Along the 1.3-kilometer trail, you can walk on both sides of the stream via boardwalks and bridges; there are benches and picnic spots along the way. This provides a focus on nature and walking alongside the cultural and historical highlights.
