Different periods come together in Thuine: churches and monastic history sit alongside the megalithic tomb in Kunkenvenne. This makes the town interesting for travelers who want to combine cultural monuments with outdoor discoveries. The Emsland region also offers a wide range of cycling and hiking opportunities, providing a broader regional context for planning your trip.

Monastic History and Art

The Franciscan Congregation of Thuine was founded on November 25, 1869. On that day, the first four sisters took their vows; Mother M. Anselma Bopp was the first Superior General. The grounds of the Franciscan monastery are home to the old St. George's Chapel, the Christ the King Church and a small mission museum. It documents the history of the order and displays handicrafts from mission regions. Tours of the monastery grounds are available by appointment. Be sure to arrange a time in advance.

Christ the King Church was built in 1928–1929 and consecrated on July 25, 1929. A mosaic in the monastery church is 8 meters high and 3.75 meters wide; it is made up of 130,000 stones. These dimensions give visitors a tangible sense of the scale of sacred art. A visit can also combine the monastery's history with the mission museum, whose exhibits explore both the history of the order and handicrafts from mission regions.

St. George's Church and the Megalithic Tomb

St. George's Church is the only church in the Diocese of OsnabrĂĽck where the simultaneum is still in effect. After restoration, the first Catholic service was held there on November 5, 1826; the Protestant parish of Freren-Thuine continues to use the church for certain occasions. It can be viewed from the outside at any time. Check the current conditions before your visit. The furnishings include a Bentheim baptismal font from the 13th century and a PietĂ  dating from around 1700.

The megalithic tomb in Kunkenvenne offers a very different impression. Its chamber is 25.5 meters long and has two stone side walls; almost all the capstones remain in their original positions. The site is accessible at any time. As access conditions may change, check them locally before traveling. The church architecture, religious art and megalithic tomb offer very different points of interest during a stay.

Cycling and Hiking in the Emsland

Thuine is located on WindmĂĽhlenberg, which, at 91 meters, is considered the highest elevation in the Emsland region. Anyone cycling between Thuine and Freren will pass the Saller See recreation area; check the current route signs before setting off. The wider Emsland travel region also has a 2,660-kilometer cycle route network with more than 50 themed day tours. For longer cycling trips, the 395-kilometer Emsland Route forms a loop through five landscapes: Northern Ems Valley, HĂĽmmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. It connects 19 towns. Towns in the Emsland along the route can serve as starting and finishing points. The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and car-free; it is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children.

The Emsland's hiking landscapes offer a variety of scenery, including gentle hills, fields, moors, heathland, forests and waterside paths. In the northeast of the Emsland district, HĂĽmmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometers. Cycling and hiking trails pass historical sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Palace, with information boards along the way. The Theikenmeer Circuit is among the nature park's trails that meet the German Hiking Association's quality criteria. The Kranichpfad trail leads about 2.5 kilometers into Theikenmeer Nature Reserve; the return journey follows the same route, making the total walking distance about 5 kilometers. A viewing platform offers panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the moorland of Wehmer Dose, and there is also a birdwatching hide on the lakeshore.

Choose your location based on the specific places you want to visit, and check the relevant visiting and tour conditions in advance.
