Lingen (Ems): Art, Local History and Discoveries
Accommodation in Lingen (Ems)
In Lingen (Ems), art and local history meet playful discoveries and a leisure pool with a range of water attractions. This gives you plenty of ways to shape your stay: explore collections and historic rooms, get to know the city centre through a puzzle game, or spend time in the water.
Art and history from different perspectives
The Kunsthalle Lingen preserves, cares for and presents part of Harry Kramer’s estate. The artist was born in Lingen in 1925 and took part in documenta III in Kassel in 1964. The Emsland Museum takes you further back in time: its permanent exhibition traces the history of the city of Lingen and the southern Emsland region from the Middle Ages to the Second World War. Also on display there is the throne treasure of the Lingener Kivelinge, featuring royal chains spanning five centuries.
The Emsland Museum shows how regional architecture and domestic culture are reflected in different rooms in the former coach house of Palais Danckelmann. The half-timbered house, dating from 1728, includes a typical bedroom with an original *Butze* (a bed cupboard), as well as a Baroque room, an 18th-century bourgeois parlour and a Biedermeier-era living room. The different rooms bring a range of ways of living and historical periods to life, telling history through more than just individual objects.
The Kunst- und Kulturvilla offers another perspective: it is an exhibition venue for the city of Lingen’s historical and cultural collections. On display are works from the city’s art collection, books from the Georgianum’s Baroque library and old photographs. These are joined by a work of art by Harry Kramer and historical toys from the former Adelmann shop. Together, these places offer different ways to discover the city: through art, everyday and architectural culture, or historical objects in collections.
Discover the city: activities for children and adults
In the Emsland Museum’s city game, children aged eight and over decipher secret codes. Each clue reveals the next destination in the city centre. The Lingen City Experience 2026 programme also includes a Kids Safari, where children can explore the city centre on their own. Both activities offer a playful way to explore the city, but with different focuses: one centres on solving coded clues, while the other encourages independent exploration.
If you would rather have stories about the city as your guide, Lingen Wirtschaft + Tourismus GmbH offers a wide variety of guided city tours, with insights into Lingen’s history. The Tourist Info, Neue Straße 3a, is the stated starting point for all the tours described. Tickets for city tours included in the 2026 city tour programme are also available there. Check dates and ticket information in advance for your planned visit.
An active alternative to museums and guided tours
The Linus Lingen leisure pool has more than 1,000 square metres of water surface. Its attractions include the Brodelberg, a lazy river and the more than 100-metre-long Black Hole slide. This offers a completely different way to spend a day alongside your cultural visits.
