Georgsdorf between windmill, moor and buckwheat
Accommodation in Georgsdorf
Georgsdorf can be explored through three very specific themes: the windmill, the Georgsdorf Moor and regional buckwheat cuisine. There are also exhibitions on historic tools, machinery and canal shipping, as well as farmer’s golf. This mix takes you from technology and local history to nature and leisure. When looking for accommodation in Georgsdorf, you can start by considering which focus you want to shape your stay: the mill, regional dishes, the moor or an active game.
Windmill history and exhibitions
The Georgsdorf Windmill is a brick gallery Dutch windmill built in 1875, with a thatched roof. It was established by a group of twelve local farmers, who had it built for around 6,500 thalers. Architecture, historic craftsmanship and local initiative come together here. Visits outside regular opening hours are possible by telephone appointment.
The mill complex includes a half-timbered barn, which serves as an exhibition space for historic tools and machinery. The complex also includes the MĂĽllerhaus, built in 1904, with a photo exhibition on shipping along the Emsland canals on the left bank.
Buckwheat and farmer’s golf
In Georgsdorf, you’ll encounter buckwheat as flour and in traditional dishes. Buckwheat flour from the mill is sold at the mill on Saturdays during opening hours; it is also available at the neighboring Grenzlandmarkt during business hours. Bookweiten-Jan Hinnerk, a traditional buckwheat dish, can be served in the Müllerhaus with traditional side dishes if ordered in advance. Original buckwheat pancakes are also considered a regional specialty.
At TSV Georgsdorf, farmer’s golf is played with a large plastic ball and a thick wooden club; the course has ten holes. Anyone can play, regardless of age or athletic ability. Package deals can be arranged on request for groups of twelve or more. Unlike the exhibitions, the focus here is on playing.
Local history and moorland
The Old Parsonage was built in 1866 and is Georgsdorf’s oldest building. Alongside the windmill, it offers another perspective on the town’s architectural history: the focus here is not on mill technology, but on the age of a historic house.
Georgsdorf Moor Nature Reserve is a remnant of the former raised bogs of the Bourtanger Moor. The area is managed with the aim of preserving or restoring open moorland, wet heaths, small bodies of water, moor lakes, scrub and moorland forests. While the mill and parsonage tell the story of the built environment, the focus here is on the moorland and the preservation of a range of habitats.
