Discover Moringen: Water, history and industrial heritage
Accommodation in Moringen
Moringen brings together a variety of reasons to visit: Flaakebad, a spring-fed pond in the upper village, an industrial monument and a memorial with clear visiting requirements.
Water spots: pools and springs
Flaakebad has a 25-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmer area and a slide. This offers a range of water activities: swim laps, spend time in the non-swimmer area or use the slide. If you plan to visit the pool, check the current visiting information and seasonal dates in advance.
Opferteich has a very different character. It lies in the upper village near St Martin’s Church; a short spur path leads from Methestraße to the grounds of the wax foundry. Tall trees and bushes surround the pond, where several springs bubble up. While Flaakebad has pools and a slide, the springs, vegetation and local lore define the scene at Opferteich.
Legends and stories surround Opferteich. One historical interpretation links it to a pre-Christian cult and judicial site. This brings together a specific natural setting and a past known only through an interpretation.
Industrial history at the gasometer
The Moringen Gasometer is the oldest surviving gas holder of this particular design in Lower Saxony. Inside the glazed area, a monitor shows a film about gas production, how the gas holder worked and possible future forms of energy generation. The gasometer thus combines a preserved technical structure with an explanation of its former function and a look at alternative energy generation. Find out about current access arrangements before visiting.
Memorial: plan your visit in advance
The Moringen Concentration Camp Memorial offers guided tours and workshops on the history of this historic site and on critically examining Nazi ideology. Visits are possible only by prior appointment. As the site is now used as a secure forensic psychiatric centre, access is also permitted only when accompanied. Plan your visit in advance and coordinate your appointment and accompaniment with the memorial.
More to discover in Moringen and the municipality
Disc golf may also be of interest when planning your leisure time in Moringen. A notice dated 22 October 2020 named the Moringen youth services centre at Nest and ReisebĂĽro Stumpe in Moringen as places where discs could be borrowed. At the time, both locations had four sets, each with a course map and rules. If you would like to include disc golf in your plans today, ask directly whether discs are available to borrow.
In Fredelsloh, also part of the municipality, KERAMIK.UM welcomes visitors interested in exploring its exhibitions. A visit to the exhibitions thus adds another cultural dimension to the natural and industrial sites. Check the current conditions before visiting.
More culture in the wider destination of Northeim
Northeim has its own historical and cultural attractions. The town wall was built between 1252 and 1305, and about half of it remains in good condition. The former pilgrims’ hostel of St Spiritus houses the town museum and is one of Lower Saxony’s most significant Gothic half-timbered buildings.
Since August 2001, Theater der Nacht has been based in a converted former fire station in Northeim. It works exclusively with puppets, masks and objects, and explores legends, myths and fairy tales. Its award-winning programme includes 200 performances, as well as courses, exhibitions and talks. Northeim Touristik also offers town, museum and forest tours. These Northeim attractions are independent cultural and excursion options in the wider destination, not features of Moringen.
You can choose accommodation based on the focus of your stay.
