Schönhagen can be explored through three clearly distinct themes: nature experiences at the ErlebnisWald Solling, a section of the Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route, and the history of Martin Luther Church and its organ. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on nature stations, a pilgrimage stage or a cultural event.

Discover nature at the ErlebnisWald Solling

At the ErlebnisWald Solling in Schönhagen, an approximately two-kilometre circular trail takes you through an experience where adults and children can engage with nature using all their senses. Interactive stations complement the trail; the 40-metre-high climate tower offers views across the treetops and the Ahletal valley. The circular trail, stations and lookout offer different ways to explore: follow the route, discover the interactive activities and take in the treetops and Ahletal valley from the tower.

The grounds are open year-round, and admission is free. Individual guided tours for groups can be booked for a date of your choice. There are also environmental education projects for kindergartens and school classes, as well as activities for children's birthday parties. So, alongside visiting independently, you can choose from a range of group activities: a guided tour, an educational project or a birthday party activity. The right option depends on whether your group would like to explore the ErlebnisWald together or is looking for an activity specifically intended for educational institutions or birthday celebrations.

Circular trail or pilgrimage route?

Alternative Route I of the Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route runs for about 2.5 kilometres from the Lunau spring to Schönhagen. It differs from the circular trail at the ErlebnisWald not only in theme but also in its course: one trail forms a loop, while the pilgrimage route leads from a named starting point into the village. If you are planning a stage of the pilgrimage route, Schönhagen is the destination of this route; for a nature visit to the ErlebnisWald, by contrast, the circular trail is the main attraction. This distinction helps you consider the two activities as different options for your stay, rather than comparing them solely by length.

Church history and organ music

The present-day Martin Luther Church in Schönhagen was built in 1831. It houses an organ that was also built in 1831 by Ernst Wilhelm Meyer, court organ builder to Hanover. The church and organ were therefore built in the same year, and Meyer is known by name as the instrument's maker. The church thus offers a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in architectural and musical history as well as nature and the pilgrimage route.

A roughly 25-minute organ recital follows the church service once a month. If you would like to plan around this musical event, check the service time before your trip. This will help you fit the event into your plans without limiting your church visit to the historic building date or the organ alone.

Accommodation in Schönhagen

For overnight stays, the Schönhagen parish offers a pilgrim room with two beds and a restored bakehouse with four beds. Their different capacities can help you match the options to the size of your travel group. It may be helpful to coordinate with the parish in advance. Therefore, check your accommodation needs beforehand and take into account how many beds you require.
