Edemissen offers ways to combine local history and outdoor activity during your stay: the tithe barn and church tell the stories of different historical periods, while guided tours and cycling routes open up further perspectives. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architectural and local history or also explore destinations in the municipality by bike.

The Tithe Barn and Local History

A dendrochronological assessment dates the construction of the tithe barn to around 1766. Around 1834, the building was converted into servants’ quarters; it remained inhabited until 1 January 1971. These milestones give the historic building a varied history of use. After renovations began in 1996, a local history room opened to the public in 2000.

The Tithe Barn Local History Museum regularly holds exhibitions and events such as heritage days, a midsummer celebration and barn festivals. As the programme may change, it is advisable to check the dates before visiting. Guided tours of the listed building and museum are available for groups on request.

Local History Tour and Church

A guided local history tour can be extended by about one kilometre through the historic old village. The extended route includes Kapral’s Diek, Martin Luther Church and Wipperhof, which is classified as a Low German hall house. The route connects various local points of interest; Wipperhof also offers a glimpse of a traditional type of house found in northern Germany.

The church in Edemissen is documented as early as 1253. In 2002, Felix M. Furtwängler completed twelve paintings on biblical themes for the church. This brings an early historical reference and a much more recent work of art together in one place. The church offers various ways for groups of all ages to explore it.

Cycling Tours in the Municipality

Cycling routes in the municipality lead to the Oelheim/Oedesse Oil and Salt Trail, farm shops and swimming spots at Lake Wehnse. The Oil and Salt Trail explores the history of oil production in Oelheim. This brings together possible destinations to suit different interests: a topic from the region’s industrial history, shopping at farm shops or time by the water. These destinations can help you choose activities for your stay according to your own preferences.

Culture in the Wider Peine Destination

The wider Peine destination offers its own cultural attractions that add to the architectural and historical picture. The Protestant St. Jakobi Church in Peine was built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1899; its original colourful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of the Holy Angels was built between 1866 and 1869 to plans by Hanoverian building councillor Haase and features a triumphal cross from the 13th century.

The Peine District Museum focuses on the history and stories of the town and region. Its 1,000 square metres showcase everyday life in different periods, as well as the lives and work of craftspeople, industrial workers, townspeople and farmers; local characteristics of the Peine region are also covered. Peine therefore offers its own thematic focus, while Edemissen has its own attractions in the tithe barn, church and tours around the municipality.
