Sittensen combines historic milling heritage with a pond in the old village centre and Low German theatre. At the museum of traditional crafts, you can learn about old trades and try your hand at two activities; the mill pond is a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll and a quieter break. There are also regular fairground dates and performances at the open-air theatre. This mix offers a variety of ways to explore traditional crafts, local history, culture and outdoor activities.

Crafts at the museum

The museum of traditional crafts is housed in a historic, listed watermill. The path to the museum is unevenly paved; the permanent exhibition and the former milling floor can only be reached by stairs. As accessibility may change, check with the museum before travelling to find out which areas are currently accessible. Visitors can try writing with a quill and ink or planing wood in the carpentry workshop. The museum forge introduces the trades of wheelwright and blacksmith. The museum of traditional crafts and the Sittensen local history association regularly offer weaving courses for adults in the historic watermill. If you plan to attend a course, confirm its availability in advance.

Village centre, church tower and theatre

The mill pond, fed by the Oste, lies in the old village centre, where visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk around it. The current tower of St Dionysius Church was built in 1909 after a fire in 1907 and is a local landmark. At the open-air theatre in Sittenser Königshof, the VfL Sittensen Low German Theatre Company performs plays in Low German. If you would like to make a theatre visit a fixed part of your trip, check the theatre’s current programme.

Fairground dates throughout the year

The regular fairground dates are also worth considering when planning your trip. Fairground operators come to Sittensen two weeks before Easter and on the first weekend in October. If you plan to travel specifically during one of these periods, check the exact dates in advance.

Hiking and cycling in the wider Rotenburg destination

Rotenburg (Wümme) district has 24 NORDPFADE circular hiking trails, ranging from 5 to 32 kilometres. The NORDPFAD Ostetal passes through a natural river landscape with dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. The Wümme Cycle Route consists of a northern route of about 125 kilometres and a southern route of about 135 kilometres. Connecting routes divide them into individual sections that are also suitable for day trips and families. The moorland also offers a distinctive experience: together with Ekelmoor, Tister Bauernmoor forms a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex in Rotenburg (Wümme) district. LandPark Lauenbrück is home to 200 wild and domestic animals in spacious enclosures and large barns. The southern route is the longer one.
