Hülsede – Renaissance History and Süntel Beeches
Accommodation in Hülsede
Hülsede is a destination for travelers who want to combine architectural history and nature in one trip. Hülsede Water Castle, St. Aegidien Church and the Süntel beeches each offer a different focus; there is also a hiking trail that passes through the village.
Renaissance and St. Aegidien
Hülsede Water Castle was built between 1529 and 1548 as a four-winged early Renaissance complex. It lies in the valley between the Deister and Süntel hills. The outbuildings are also protected monuments. The castle’s architectural style and clearly dated construction period give it a distinct place in the village’s history.
St. Aegidien offers another historical point of interest: it houses a large pre-Reformation baptismal font, dated to the second half of the 15th century. This places the font earlier than the construction of the water castle. Those interested in the history of both sights can explore these different periods.
Guided visits to St. Aegidien are available for groups of more than eight people by prior arrangement, outside of church services. A fee is charged for the tour. Confirm your visit again before your trip.
The water castle also provides a setting for weddings, family celebrations, corporate events, seminars and conferences. If you would like to combine your visit to Hülsede with such an occasion, confirm availability directly with the venue.
Hiking and Süntel Beeches
The Deister-Süntel Trail passes through Hülsede and runs for 30 kilometers from Barsinghausen toward Hessisch Oldendorf. Its length gives you a concrete measure for planning your hike. As the route may change, check the latest trail information before setting out.
Four Süntel beeches stand at Westernegge, on the edge of the forest behind the war memorial. The contorted beech, also known as a Süntel beech, is one of the natural monuments in the municipality of Hülsede. At Krackes Ruh, there is a place to sit beside newly planted Süntel beeches. Alongside the longer hiking route, these individual natural landmarks and a place to pause offer different points of interest. If the seating area is important to your plans, check the conditions on site.
Hülsede in the wider Schaumburg travel destination
The wider Schaumburg travel destination offers further opportunities to explore nature and culture. At the Old Quarry in Liekwegen, two circular routes, 1.7 and 2.3 kilometers long, pass five stations currently. Visitors can learn about the importance of the quarry habitat and its biodiversity. Compared with the 30-kilometer Deister-Süntel Trail, these circular routes offer considerably shorter distances. The different lengths make it easier to choose outings to suit your preferred distance.
For art and history enthusiasts, the Weser Renaissance Route is a guide to the district of Schaumburg. There are also several ways to travel to the district: by car, train and even by boat via the Mittelland Canal. An important east-west railway line runs through the district. Stations are located in Stadthagen and Bückeburg; there are smaller stations in Lindhorst and Kirchhorsten.
