Sachsenhagen combines historic buildings with a guided tour and a route through the town. Two half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries stand on Mittelstraße; the castle tower, built in 1248, is part of the Sachsenhagen Castle complex. The Evangelical Lutheran St. Elisabeth’s Church is a stop on a guided tour, while the stork route continues through Sachsenhagen towards other places. This gives you a choice between exploring the town’s architectural history, visiting a church and following a route through several places.

Half-Timbered Houses, Castle Tower and Castle

The two half-timbered houses on Mittelstraße date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another historic landmark is the Sachsenhagen castle tower: it is part of the Sachsenhagen Castle complex and was built in 1248. The castle itself dates back to the 13th century and is first mentioned in the 1253 Treaty of Hitzacker. It can be viewed from the outside. This brings together several different historical reference points: the half-timbered houses from later centuries, the tower’s construction date and the medieval origins of the castle.

Church, Stork Route and Wildlife Conservation

A guided tour of Sachsenhagen takes you to the Evangelical Lutheran St. Elisabeth’s Church, which you visit as part of the tour. The tour lasts about two hours. If you would like to include it in your plans, check in advance whether it is available on your intended date. The approximate duration gives you an idea of how much time to allow for this activity.

The stork route offers a different perspective. It runs from Auhagen through Sachsenhagen and onwards towards Wölpinghausen and Bergkirchen. Unlike the guided tour, which has a specific destination at the church, the route draws your attention to a series of places. The wildlife and species conservation station is also located in Sachsenhagen’s municipal forest and takes in injured and orphaned wild animals. This adds the themes of wildlife and species conservation to the area’s architectural history and local sightseeing.

The Sachsenhagen marksmen’s festival takes place in early July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year.

Schaumburg as a Wider Setting

Beyond Sachsenhagen, the district of Schaumburg offers a broader geographical perspective. To the northeast, the district borders Lake Steinhude near Hagenburg; to the south, the Weser River and the Weser Uplands shape the landscape. The highest point in the district, at 378 m above sea level, is in Goldbeck, a district of the city of Rinteln. These regional landscapes complement Sachsenhagen’s architectural history with other themes to consider when planning your trip.

For those interested in art and history, the district’s Weser Renaissance Route offers a guide to the area. Another hands-on nature and learning experience within the wider Schaumburg destination is the Liekwegen Old Quarry: along two circular trails of 1.7 km and 2.3 km, visitors can learn about the importance of quarry habitats and their biodiversity at five stations currently in place. The two circular trails differ in length by 0.6 km.

Transport links can also be considered at district level: Schaumburg can be reached by car, train and even by boat via the Mittelland Canal. An important east–west rail line runs through the district. There are railway stations in Stadthagen and Bückeburg, and smaller stations in Lindhorst and Kirchhorsten. This information gives you an overview of Schaumburg if you are planning to travel beyond Sachsenhagen.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Trip
