Neuenkirchen: St. Johannis and the Stader Loop
Accommodation in Neuenkirchen
Neuenkirchen offers two distinct reasons to plan a trip: the history of St. Johannis Church and a cycling loop that explicitly includes the town. You can weigh up cultural interests and cycling as separate priorities, or take both into account when planning your trip.
St. Johannis: Foundation, Reconstruction and Organ
St. Johannis Church was founded in 1270 at the initiative of a knight. He proposed its construction and endowed the church for Benedictine nuns. It was subsequently demolished and rebuilt twice: once in the 19th century and once in the 20th century. The 20th century also brought a special distinction: St. Johannis received one of the first new mechanical organs of that century in Germany. The church’s foundation, reconstruction and organ history thus offer different ways of exploring the history of the same church.
Another historic address
At Dorfstraße 56 stands the childhood home of Heinrich Peter Hellwege; today, the building serves as a village community centre. Hellwege was Federal Minister for Bundesrat Affairs from 1949 to 1955 and Minister-President of Lower Saxony from 1955 to 1959. This connection complements the church’s history with a political career and a building that now serves the community.
Cycling around the Stader Loop
The “Altes Land: Stader Loop” cycling tour runs through the Altes Land, along the Elbe and the Fruit Route, and passes through Neuenkirchen, among other places. This provides a specific circular route for trip planning that includes the town. In the wider Stade travel region, visitors can explore the Altes Land by bike; the Elbe Cycle Route is particularly recommended. The loop that includes Neuenkirchen and the regional cycling recommendation for the Altes Land thus offer two different ways to find your bearings.
The wider Stade travel region
In the wider Stade travel region, the district is shaped by broad marshlands along the Elbe, the cultural landscape of the Altes Land, river valleys in the Geest and unspoilt raised bogs. These landscapes offer opportunities for recreation and nature watching. The region encompasses a variety of landscapes and interests, complementing the focus on Neuenkirchen’s local history and cycling loop.
One maritime highlight in the wider Stade travel region is Wischhafen. The Kehdingen Coastal Shipping Museum includes the coastal motor vessel MS IRIS-JÖRG, which visitors can board in the adjacent listed harbour. You can also earn the Kehdingen sailor’s certificate at the museum. The Wischhafen Maritime Walk offers a different way to explore the area: information signs on a range of maritime topics are posted at many locations. Information boards and a leaflet available from the tourist information office and museum provide information about the region’s crafts, trade, historic locks and ferries. The museum and the walk each have a different focus: the coastal motor vessel and sailor’s certificate at the museum, and maritime topics along the walk.
