The Wabe flows through Sickte, linking the landscape with a long history of use. Historically, the river powered three mills associated with Sickte: the Güntersche Erb oil and fulling mill, the Erbenzins mill and the Bergmann paper mill. The river is therefore both a feature of the landscape and part of the town’s recorded history.

Culture at the manor house and in Neuerkerode

At Sickte Manor House, the Sickter Kulturinitiative SIKKI organizes exhibitions and workshops in the staircase gallery. The Knights’ Hall is another cultural venue in the building, hosting readings, concerts and exhibitions; civil wedding ceremonies are also held there. The cultural program may change. Be sure to confirm arrangements for wedding ceremonies in advance.

Villa Luise in Sickte-Neuerkerode has a different artistic profile. Its workshop works with drawing, painting, ceramics, performance and installation. The villa presents art in exhibitions and events, and sells works on site. On request, you can meet artists, visit the workshop or join a gallery tour. Please check visitor arrangements and opening details in advance.

The Peter and Paul Church in Sickte-Neuerkerode is also part of local cultural life. Services and devotions, occasional musical events and traditional activities throughout the church year take place there. The religious program follows the calendar and the congregation.

Local history between tradition and architecture

Sickte keeps up the tradition of raising the maypole, with dates varying from year to year. The King’s Cemetery, on the boundary between Niedersickte and Volzum, is designated as a visible historic landmark. In Obersickte, a historic farmstead has a gallery running around the buildings of an open quadrangle. The layout of the buildings, together with the gallery that surrounds them, shapes the architectural impression. For centuries, justice was administered at the former site of the Kalandslinde.

Swimming and activities at the outdoor pool

Sickte Outdoor Pool has a 25-metre swimming and diving pool with a three-metre diving tower, a one-metre diving board and starting blocks. There is also a children’s paddling pool and a non-swimmers’ pool with an 80-metre water slide. A volleyball net and extensive sunbathing lawns round out the facilities. Alongside culture and local history, this offers another option for active hours by the water. As facilities may change, check current operating information before your visit.

Places to visit in the Sickte collective municipality

Outside the town of Sickte, but within the collective municipality, the Evesser Hoch in Evessen is an Early Bronze Age princely tomb beside the main road. The Eilumer Horn lies in the Eilum Forest above Evessen and Ampleben and, at 323.30 metres, is designated as the highest point of the Elm. Hikes towards the Eilumer Horn can start at a car park above Evessen’s allotment-garden settlement; an information board there shows hiking and circular routes. This makes it possible to combine Sickte’s local history and art offerings with an excursion in the collective municipality, without treating the different places as one and the same.
