Weather (Ruhr) reveals itself through historic places, museums and viewpoints: half-timbered houses in Freiheit, the castle ruins with their viewpoint and the view of Harkort Lake each offer a different perspective. The museum topics also range from biography to vehicle models. You can decide whether to focus your selection on local history, specific museum topics or Seeplatz.

Freiheit: Half-timbered houses, places of remembrance and a sensory garden

Freiheit is one of the city of Weather (Ruhr)’s most outstanding and defining places. The Five-Gable Corner, an ensemble of half-timbered houses dating from the 17th century, is located on the Freiheit grounds. Time Stones made of Ruhr sandstone add to the site. Their QR codes provide information about people who shaped Weather (Ruhr), including Friedrich Harkort and Gustav Vorsteher. In December 2024, the Time Stones were already visible. Freiheit also has a play area known as the sensory garden. This brings together a historic architectural ensemble, information about notable figures and a play area with its own name.

Castle history and views

The castle in Weather was built around 1250. Parts of the castle ruins are freely accessible to visitors throughout the day; the side tower is a well-known viewpoint. A staircase with a new railing runs along the side of the ruins to the newly created city terrace, an oak viewing deck below the ruins. The castle and terrace appeal to different interests: the castle evokes the area’s earlier architectural history, while the city terrace focuses on the view.

Harkort, Henriette Davidis and vehicle models

Harkort Tower stands on Harkortberg. It was built in 1884 with private donations in memory of Friedrich Harkort. The Time Stones in Freiheit also provide information about Harkort, alongside other figures who shaped Weather (Ruhr). In Wengern, within Weather (Ruhr), the Henriette Davidis Museum traces the life of the cookbook author, who found success in the 19th century. The Bleistahl Museum offers a different focus: visitors can see more than 300 vehicle models spanning six decades. The museum topics thus range from life stories and cookbook history to an extensive model collection.

At Seeplatz, wooden benches offer views of Harkort Lake. Cyclists on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route are encouraged to use the spot as a place to rest. This adds a specific place to stop for a break with lake views to the historical and museum attractions.

More experiences in Ennepe-Ruhr District

Ennepe-Ruhr District also has distinctive destinations with different focuses. The Glörtalsperre reservoir offers opportunities for hiking and jogging; during the warm summer months, it is also possible to swim in clean, natural water. Guided tours of Klutert Cave are offered several times a day. On some days, physically demanding action tours are available; a fossil workshop and a cave visit are offered for children’s groups. The cave has been designated a National Natural Monument and a National Geotope, and fossils are exceptionally well preserved on its walls.

At the Henrichshütte Hattingen, you can follow the flow of materials from ore, coke and limestone to molten pig iron along the “Path of Iron” at the LWL Industrial Museum. A glass elevator takes you up to the 55-metre-high “Giant”; from the top, you can look out over the region’s past and present. The hiking trails also have specific figures to compare: the Ennepetal Karst Hiking Trail is 11.5 km long, has 330 m of elevation gain and 49 stops, including five with information boards. The third stage of the Ennepe Trail runs for about 14 km from Ennepetal Dam to Klutert Cave. These examples in Ennepe-Ruhr District offer a different focus from Weather (Ruhr), with its Freiheit, castle and local museums.
