Herdringen can be explored on several levels: trails lead through the village and around it, open-air theatre brings performances outdoors every year, and historic buildings tell the story of the local area. Whether you’d rather combine your stay with hiking and cycling or with culture and architectural history, the different themes give you concrete ideas for planning your trip.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The X1 hiking trail, also known as the Plackweg, passes through Herdringen and runs through the Arnsberger Wald Nature Park. The Herdringen Panorama Trail offers a different perspective, following a route around the village. Marked feeder paths with the letter h lead from the village centre to the trail. This gives you a route through the village and another around it; check the signage and conditions locally.

The 3-Klöster cycling tour also passes through Herdringen, running via the castle park to Oelinghausen Monastery. This lets you treat hiking and cycling as different ways to explore, without confusing the routes. As route details may change, it’s a good idea to check the latest information before setting off.

Open-Air Theatre and Heinrich Knoche

Herdringen Open-Air Theatre stages performances every year from late May to the first days of September. Performances have been held at its current location annually since 1954; the first season opened with Friedrich Schiller’s “William Tell”. The programme includes fairy tales for children and comedies for adults. These formats give you an idea of the range on offer, while individual productions and dates vary from season to season. So if you’re planning to attend a performance, check the programme for that year.

The Heinrich Knoche educational trail explores a different subject. The circular route is around 500 m long and has seven information stations about Heinrich Knoche’s life. Knoche (1831–1911) is considered a pioneer of modern arithmetic teaching and taught at the elementary school in Herdringen from 1852 to 1892. The Old School also commemorates the teacher and arithmetic master. The trail and the school building thus highlight different aspects of the same local figure.

Local History and Architectural Heritage

The Antonius Häuschen stands at the corner of Krähenbrink and Telgenweg. The Storm brothers built it in 1713 as a small religious monument in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua. Half-timbered houses also shape the village streetscape near the church; most of them are listed buildings. Kneers Speicher, a listed building, was built around 1700 and stands at the crossroads of Ostentor and Habbeler Weg. Sammelmanns Hof is considered the oldest farm in Herdringen, with a history that can be traced back to 1202.

St. Antonius and St. Vitus Church also brings together different uses and phases of design. When it was redesigned in 2006, the altar was placed on an elliptically curved altar island in the centre of the congregation. The old part of the church is used for baptisms, meditation and exhibitions. Local traditions also include the shooting festivals, celebrated as major village festivals with a very long history; their dates and programmes vary.

Herdringen Castle and the Landscape Park

Herdringen Castle is a historic manor house. The present castle was built between 1844 and 1853 to plans by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner; the castle chapel recalls Zwirner’s work on Cologne Cathedral. The English-style landscape park at Herdringen Castle was laid out on a generous scale in the 1840s. If you plan to visit the castle, note the current condition: it is currently open by prior arrangement only.

Planning Your Stay and Accommodation

For a performance, it’s worth checking the relevant programme; for the castle, you should arrange your visit in advance.
